About EBV DNA, PCR Test

Epstein Barr Virus DNA test is performed on a sample of blood to measure the level of EBV DNA in the blood. It is performed to confirm EBV infection and also during the treatment and after the treatment of EBV infection. It is also known as EBV DNA PCR Blood test. Infection occurs early in life, and by 10 years of age, 70% to 90% of children have been infected with this virus. Usually, infection in children is asymptomatic or mild and may be associated with minor illnesses. PCR stands for polymerase chain reaction, a process that copies and reproduces DNA. A Quantitative PCR test is extremely sensitive and can detect an extremely small number of copies of the virus in the blood and other bodily fluids. This assists in the early detection of an EBV infection as well as tracking and monitoring.
