The pollen from trees and shrubs cause hayfever. It is a type of allergy which doctors call it as seasonal allergic rhinitis. The symptoms of hayfever are sneezing, watery eyes and a stuffy nose. The tree pollen allergy is seasonal and is caused usually between February and June. The trees release pollens which is either carried by winds and insects. It must be noted that not all pollens cause hayfever. The symptoms of allergy caused by tree pollens can vary from place to place according to the weather condition of the country and the type of tree pollen that caused the allergy. On persistence of the above mentioned symptoms, you need to go to doctor immediately for a test.
Before taking the test, you need to speak to the doctor regarding the medications you are taking. This is important because the results of the pollen test may interfere with the medications that you are taking and cause misdiagnosis. The doctor may advice you not to take antihistamines for 3 days before the test for the above mentioned reason. You also need to tell the doctor if you had anaphylaxis before, which is a life threatening allergy reaction.
There is no harm caused by the test as the scratch is very small. The patient might find a slight itchy sensation after the test. After the test, the doctor can identify the allergy causing agent through the test. The next step is examining whether the allergy can be stopped by avoiding those allergy causing substances. The doctor will prescribe medication which will cure the allergy in due time.
The doctor performs something called scratch test to find the allergy causing agent. For adults, it is performed in the forearm whereas children need to sleep on their stomach. The test is done on the upper back. Initially, the doctor puts droplets of fluids in a row. The fluids are the extracted proteins from various allergy causing agents. The doctor puts a noticeably small scratch under each droplet. This is for the skin to come in contact with the allergy causing agent. The doctor marks each droplet with a code or a chart for identification. The patient is asked to sit for 20 minutes without scratching the skin even in case of an itching sensation. The skin reacts with the allergy causing agent and shows its impact.
