Allergy - Willow Test

Allergy - Willow Test

also known as: Allergy Willow Enzyme Assay

Pollen from the Willow tree can sometimes act as an allergen, and causes allergic conjunctivitis, rhinitis and asthma. Common symptoms include headaches, itching, wheezing and sneezing among others. A test for immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels in the blood can indicate whether you are allergic or suffering symptoms of another illness. IgE antibodies are commonly found in the lungs, skin and mucous membranes. Histamine and IgE are produced by your body as a reaction to allergens, and increased levels of IgE antibodies generally indicate that you are allergic. As the external symptoms are quite common and can be mistaken for other illnesses, diagnosing the allergy in a timely manner is crucial for treatment.

The IgE test is carried out on your blood sample. Wear a short-sleeve or sleeveless shirt, as it makes extracting the blood easier. You will need to notify your physician of your current prescription medication details, your medical history – complete with previous illnesses and underlying medical conditions, specific allergies and any other information deemed relevant by your physician. As you will lose blood, it is recommended you stay hydrated before and after the procedure. Make sure to load up on potassium as well.

Immunoglobulins E (IgE) are antibodies that are created specifically to combat allergens. Levels of allergen specific IgE antibodies are measured, and increased levels could indicate an allergy. If left untreated, Willow allergy can cause severe symptoms such as anaphylaxis. However, increased levels of IgE do not indicate the severity of the condition, only the presence of it. Let your physician guide you further on the treatment procedures.

Required quantity of blood will be obtained from you. The surface of the skin is cleaned with antiseptic. A band is wrapped around the upper arm to apply pressure, in order to locate the vein easily. The blood is drawn through a needle, usually from a vein in the inner elbow. The sample is stored safely and is sent for further examination. Levels of IgE in your blood are measured through procedures like Basic Flow Cytometry.
