Golden Knee Replacement - Know More About It!

Artificial replacement parts are made of strong plastic, metal, or ceramic. All knee replacements, partial or total, will have parts made of a few different materials (likely metals and plastic). In most cases, each component is built from titanium, cobalt-chromium alloys, or a titanium and cobalt mixed metal. The chosen materials must be durable, allow for some flexibility with movement and be biocompatible (meaning it will not be rejected, corrode nor react with the body).

1. Cobalt-Chromium Alloys— Chromium alloys are one of the most commonly used materials in implant components. For those with nickel allergies, some particles from this metal can get into the bloodstream and cause a reaction.

2. Titanium and Titanium Cobalt—Titanium cobalt is used as frequently as cobalt-chromium alloys in joint replacement components. Since this metal is softer, it tends to make up the tibial part of the replacement where the plastic inserts lock-in. In the tibial component, the metal choice is less important since there is little traction or rubbing during movement.

3. Polyethylene— This is a type of strong plastic found in the tibial patellar (kneecap) component and the plastic spacer. The plastic components allow the metal pieces to glide smoothly throughout the movement. This material is metal-free.

Those with Nickel Allergies-

If you have a history of skin reactions to metal jewellery or are unsure if you may be allergic, it might be worth getting formally tested by an allergist. In general, the femoral component is the only artificial component that those with a nickel allergy need to be conscious of when selecting material and manufacturer. Majority of the femoral parts are made from cobalt-chromium since it is a very tough metal. The tibial component (the other component made of metal) is usually made of softer, titanium alloy, which has very low (almost untraceable) amounts of nickel.

The golden knee replacement surgery is a blessing for the people who have a metal allergy. These knee implants have enhanced surface coating of Titanium Niobium Nitride (TiNiN). This coating gives the implant a golden coloured look (hence named golden knee) and improves the longevity and performance of knee replacement surgery. This coating also makes the implant allergy-proof.

The gold knee is one of the best implants available today and the most successful too. It not only increases the life of the implant but also prevents any allergic reactions in the patient. Regular knee implants made of chromium cobalt alloy tend to release metal ions in the body. In patients who have a metal allergy, these metal ions can cause inflammation in the knee area and eventually cause complications like infection, loosening, and persistent knee pain. Golden Knee implants do not induce allergic reaction with human tissue. Its wear and tear are very low. Hence a Golden Knee replacement surgery is generally suggested for such patients. Due to its improved longevity of up to 40 years, this implant is preferred for knee replacements in patients younger than 60 years.

However, any patient can undergo Golden knee Replacement surgery but it is preferably advisable for patients who have a metal allergy and Patients younger than 60 years.

Benefits of Golden Knee Replacement-

  • Allergy-proof

  • Improved longevity of up to 40 years

  • Improved durability of the implant

  • Better Biocompatibility

  • Better surgical results

Key Benefits Of A Homeopathic Approach For Diabetes!

Key Benefits Of A Homeopathic Approach For Diabetes!

Homeopathy, since its inception, has been termed a pseudoscience, as something that is not backed by proper science. It continues to be a hotly debated topic centuries after its invention but the main aim of homeopathy is to push for the individual to heal themselves. The healing comes from within and the homeopathic treatment induces the body’s natural healing properties so that the body experiences almost no damage from harsh chemicals found in allopathic treatments.

Homeopathic treatment, also known as alternative or complementary medicines, is effective in a lot of cases and not as a placebo effect. Diabetes is a disease that results from imbalances in the blood sugar levels and the fact that the pancreas cannot keep up with the insulin requirement of the body and is overworked, thereby damaging the cells that produce insulin. There are a number of ways in which homeopathy can help keep blood sugar levels normal, some of these are:

  1. Acupuncture: Something that is a lesser known fact about diabetes is that it can cause nerve damage- diabetic neuropathy. Some of the complications this can cause are numbness in different areas of the body, further damage to internal organs like the heart. Acupuncture is a great solution for this as its purpose is to induce the body’s natural pain killers. It can help heal chronic pain that diabetic neuropathy brings along.
  2. Chromium: Diabetes, apart from disrupting insulin flow, also affects blood sugar levels in the body. It further damages the body’s sensitivity to insulin thereby affecting its ability to absorb insulin into the system. Chromium helps in maintaining the normal levels of blood sugar, increases insulin sensitivity and helps improve its function by amplifying glucose tolerance. Chromium-rich food items include seafood, vegetables and fruits and even oatmeal and hazelnuts.
  3. Ginseng: Ginseng has been studied and seen to be effective in bringing down insulin resistance thereby increasing the functionality of insulin in the body, helping in its absorption. Fasting blood sugar levels are what determine whether you suffer from diabetes and studies have shown that ginseng has made beneficial differences to the fasting blood glucose levels.
  4. Biofeedback: This technique is one that increases your awareness about the functions of the body and thus provides you with more control over the functions. These functions may not be ones that you think about but biofeedback can help you gain awareness of them and extend it beyond just awareness to controlling your body’s pain responses. “Guided imagery” falls under this technique, whereby the patient associates curing of their diseases with calming images that they are subjected to.
  5. Fibre-rich foods: Food that is rich in fibre content is great for controlling blood sugar levels for fibre is something that the body is unable to digest so it stalls the rise of blood sugar levels in the body after a meal. Any plant-based food item is rich in fibre content.

Acne Flare Up - What To Eat & What To Avoid?

Acne Flare Up - What To Eat & What To Avoid?

Intake of foods of high Glycemic Index (GI) worsens acne. GI measures the rate at which blood sugar levels rise because of the intake of foods containing carbohydrates such as soda, white bread, processed breakfast cereals, chips, baked and other junk foods. Diet and acne are directly related.

Therefore, you should adopt a perfect diet plan for your acne.

  1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These have anti-inflammatory effects whereas foods with Omega-6 Fatty acids produce substances such as inflammatory prostaglandins. Such foods include walnuts, flaxseed oil, fish oil, fish roe (egg), sea foods, spinach, soybeans and chia seeds.
  2. Low Glycemic Foods: Eat non- starchy foods such as vegetables, legumes and fruits low on the GI count. Avoid carbs, especially simple carbs. Potatoes should be off your platter for quite some time.
  3. Vitamin A and Vitamin E: An ounce of almonds gives about 7.4 milligram of vitamin A. You can also consume almond milk or almond oil. Other foods rich in Vitamin A are sun flower seeds, sesame or pumpkin; Swiss chard, mustard greens, spinach, turnip greens, kale, plant oils such as wheat gram oil, sunflower oil, hazelnuts, pine nuts and avocado. Sources of vitamin A include liver, broccoli, orange, fatty fish.
  4. Avoid dairy products: They aggravate acne flare-ups because of the hormones contained in milk.
  5. Chromium Rich Foods: They stabilize levels of blood sugar. The suggested foods are orange pancakes, Tortellini and broccoli salad, alcohol-free sangria, such as grape juice, open-face ham sandwiches with Rye crisp bread. Other sources of chromium are onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and whole grains. For more effective results, include foods with Vitamin C that add to the absorption of chromium.
  6. Zinc-Rich Foods: Sources of zinc include cereals, wheat grams, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, meats, shell fish, squash seeds, fruits such as pomegranates and avocados, dark chocolates, spinach, mushroom, cashew nuts, almonds, walnuts and hazelnuts.
  7. Avoid intake of excess iodineExcess iodine causes acne flare-ups.

Vitamins And Minerals: How To Get What You Need?

Vitamins And Minerals: How To Get What You Need?

Talk about nutrition and carbs, proteins and fats come to the mind immediately. However, these are the macronutrients and are not the only group of nutrients. More important are the micronutrients, comprising of a group of very important substances known as minerals and vitamins.

Read on to know the most important vitamins and minerals that your body needs and the role they play:

  1. Vitamin A: Essential for healthy eyes, general growth and development and glowing skin. These are found in carrots, sweet potatoes and oranges.
  2. Vitamin B: These are essential for iron absorption, improved immunity and production of energy. Whole grains and unprocessed foods and vegetables like lentils, potatoes, bananas, yeast and molasses are good sources of these vitamins.
  3. Vitamin C: Required for iron absorption, blood clotting, elastic skin and antioxidant function. Found in good amounts in citrus fruits, guava, kiwi, grapefruits, strawberries, etc.
  4. Vitamin D: Extremely important for bone development, these are found in eggs, mushrooms and fish.
  5. Vitamin E: It improves blood circulation and reduces free radicals, which is essential for cancer protection. Almonds, nuts, tomatoes and sunflower seeds are good sources of vitamin E.
  6. Vitamin K: It is very essential for the process of blood coagulation. These are found in spinach, broccoli, kale and other green vegetables.
  7. Iron: Very essential ingredient for blood formation and muscle building. Clams, oysters, soybeans, lentils and spinach are great sources of iron.
  8. Calcium: Most important ingredient, as it helps in the formation of teeth and bones. Dairy products, tofu and cheese are very good sources.
  9. Zinc: A key ingredient essential for overall growth, immunity and fertility. Spinach, beans, oysters and dark chocolate carry a good amount of Zinc.
  10. Folic acid: Essential for iron absorption, cell regeneration, and in pregnancy for healthy development of the baby. Green leafy vegetables, asparagus, peas, seeds, nuts, lentils, beets, corn, etc. are good sources.

Trace minerals like iodine, manganese, copper, fluoride, selenium and chromium are also essential but in very small amounts. While these are not the only essential vitamins and minerals, these are the most important ones. The quantities of these substances required on a daily basis are very small, but critical for functions listed above. In addition, some of them also help in releasing free radicals, which provide protection against cancer and chronic inflammation. This helps prevent chronic health conditions like heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

An important point to consider is while there are multiple supplements available in the market today to make sure you get all of these nutrients, try to eat a wholesome meal and get these through natural sources to the maximum extent possible. The natural foods are the best source, and supplements should be used only when these cannot be obtained naturally.
