Complete blood count, also termed CBC in medical term, is a test performed to analyze the human body and to detect any sickness and disease or any imbalances which include anaemia, leukaemia, and any other infection. CBC commonly used among the type of blood tests prescribed by doctors or physicians to detect disorders in body functionality. A complete blood count involves inspection of:

  • Red blood cells: carry oxygen
  • White blood cells: provides immunity
  • Haemoglobin: moves the oxygen protein to red blood cells
  • Hematocrit: proportion of red blood cells to plasma in blood
  • Plasma: helps in the blood clotting

There is no such preparation which could be required for CBC as you can usually eat or do anything before the test. You just need to wear some comfortable clothes preferably a short sleeve shirt or t-shirt or something you can roll up the sleeve quickly without making the arms tight. However, your doctor or the lab assistant can ask you for fasting for some duration before the test if the blood sample is taken for different purpose too.

As mentioned above in the introduction of this article, The CBC test used to detect the type of sickness or abnormality of your body function with the help of calculations of blood cells we have in our body.

Red blood cells: If the count of red blood cells is lower than average then you are anaemic, and if it exceeds than normal it indicates severe heart diseases.
White blood cells: if the count of white blood cells is lower than usual count then you must be suffering from leukopenia and if the number exceeds than usual then it’s an indication of inflammation or some infection.

There is no problematic procedure required in CBC, but this test to be done by an expert only. The steps are listed below:

  • The selected area must wipe with cotton dipped in alcohol or antiseptic.
  • To identify the exact vein an elastic band or tourniquet can be tied around the upper shoulder.
  • The doctor or a lab assistant will then insert the needle of the injection and take out the blood and will collect the blood according to the need in the vessel mentioning your name.
  • Immediately the injected should be covered with a cotton pad to stop the bleeding.
  • The sample then will be in the labs for further inspections.
