Frequent urination, severe thirst without any causes, unexplained loss of weight and increased hunger are symptoms of diabetes. Diabetes is a situation in which blood sugar levels are too high. Type-2 diabetes involves cases in which the body does not use the insulin well, and hence the glucose remains in the blood. Hence, your doctor might ask you to take a blood glucose test in which the amount of glucose in the blood is measures to determine if you have diabetes or not.
You cannot eat anything eight hours before the test. Any sort of medication or drug must be informed to your doctor in prior. Wear short-sleeved or sleeveless clothes preferably.
Normal fasting glucose levels are around 70-100 mg /dL (milligrams/ deciliter). If the values are higher or equal to 126 mg/ dL, then it indicates the presence of diabetes.
The test requires a blood sample. The area, usually accommodating the visible vein on the inside of your hand (near your elbow) is cleaned using an alcohol pad. The brood is drawn out using a thin needle. The punctured area is then bandaged. The sample is sent to the lab for analysis. There might be a little bleeding or a mild spell of dizziness as blood is drawn.
