Electrophoresis (24 Hrs Urine) Test

The 24 hours urine protein checks the functions of kidney and helps to detect disease. Urinary protein electrophoresis test consists of multiple samples of urine taken over a 24-hour period. But this test does not show what kind of protein are in the urine and what causes protein loss. To determine the cause of protein loss, two types- Serum Protein Electrophoresis Test (SPEP) and Urine Protein Electrophoresis Test (UPEP)- are done. The test together with other screening investigations is used to diagnose many renal health concerns. A 24-hour urine protein test is taken if you have symptoms of glomerulonephritis or nephrotic syndrome.

No preparation is needed for the serum protein electrophoresis test (SPEP). In certain circumstances, you may be asked to fast for 10 to 12 hours before the test. A healthcare professional will simply use a needle to take the blood sample and mix with some agent to draw the result. Even for urine protein electrophoresis test (UPEP), no special preparation is required. But people need to stop taking certain medicines such as neomycin, salicylates, tolbutamide and etc. that can alter the test results. It is advisable to ask your doctor before taking any medications.

Serum Protein Electrophoresis Test: A negative result indicates that no abnormal Immunoglobulin is present. With a negative result, you may not need additional testing. Positive results from the test indicate the presence of abnormal Immunoglobulin. This may suggest the existence of an underlying health condition such as immune system disorder, multiple myeloma, etc.

Urine Protein Electrophoresis Test: Albumin levels should be below 5 milligrams per decilitre. Any amount of globulins more than 5 mg of albumin will be considered abnormal. A number of conditions can lead to high levels of protein in your urine such as kidney failure, urinary tract infection and etc.

A small amount of urine will be collected in the container provided over a period of 24 hours, starting after the first void of the day. This will help flush out impurities from the urethra so they won’t be included in the sample. Make sure your genital area is clean. If using soap, make sure you fully rinse it away. Collect a part of every urine of the day and refrigerate until it is taken to the lab. The lab technician will test with the suitable agents and prepare the report.
