X-Ray Joints / Extremities Test

X-Ray Joints / Extremities Test

X-rays are high-energy radiations. An X-ray machine produces short bursts of X-rays which can easily pass through our body like fluids, soft tissues. However, dense tissue like bones will block some of the X-rays. Denser the tissues fewer X-rays pass through the body. An arthrogram is a test using X-rays to obtain a series of pictures of a joint after a contrast material (dye, water, air) has been injected into the joint. This allows the doctor to see the soft tissue structures of your joints. However, without contrast material cannot see these structures. A special type of X-ray, called fluoroscopy, is used to take pictures of the joint.

In general, you undress whatever part of your body needs examination. You may wear a light colour gown during the exam, depending on which area is being X-rayed. You may also be asked to remove jewellery, eyeglasses and any metal objects because they can show up on an X-ray. You're given a liquid called contrast medium. Contrast mediums like barium and iodine, help outline a specific area of your body on the X-ray image. You may swallow the contrast medium or receive it as an injection or an enema.

As discussed earlier X-rays passes through the body and shows the internal body bones, which can detect the fractures. Also used in the detection of cancer and in radiation therapy. X-rays are done to any body part to check on bones skull fractures and joints. Computed tomography aka CT is a medical imaging technique where images or slices of specific areas of the body are obtained from a large series of two-dimensional X-ray images taken in different directions. These cross-sectional images can be combined into a three-dimensional image of the inside of the body and used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in various medical disciplines.
