X-RAY ORBIT Test

X-RAY ORBIT Test

Orbital X-Ray or orbital radiography involves study of the area and structures containing the eye. The orbit is the circle of thin bones that protects the eye, even extending behind the eye and nearly wrapping around it. It is useful for detecting fractures of the surrounding bone arising from injury or disease. It is also commonly used for detecting foreign objects in the eye that an ophthalmoscope cannot detect and is sometimes given prior to an MRI where metal fragments could cause significant damage.

An orbital X-ray does not require any special preparation. However, you may be asked to remove all clothing and jewelry from the waist up because buttons, zippers, clasps, or jewelry might interfere with the test images. If you are pregnant, it is important to tell the X-ray technician about it. X-rays are usually avoided during pregnancy because there is a small chance that the radiation may harm the developing baby. But if the X-ray is necessary, precautions can be taken to protect the fetus. There is no restriction on any kind of diet.

As mentioned above, it is useful for detecting fractures of the surrounding orbital structures arising from injury or disease. Normal findings will show the bones of the orbit intact, and will show similarity between the orbit that is  being studied and the unaffected orbit. Positive findings may show that there has been injury to the eye. Certain signs may indicate disease that is affecting the orbital structures. Tiny fractures in the orbital bones can usually be detected  on the radiograph. The images from the radiograph will help the doctor to devise a treatment plan for you.

You will be asked to enter a special room that will most likely contain a table and a large X-ray machine hanging from the ceiling.

The X-ray can be taken in either an erect or supine position, although most usually erect. The X-ray is taken PA (postero-antero), meaning that you will face towards the receiver and away from the X-rays source. Your chin will rest on the image receiver, which tilts the head up. The procedure may take a few minutes.

Average price range of the test is between Rs.200 to Rs.1300 depending on the factors of city, quality and availablity.
