Uncontrolled quantity of nitric oxide (NO) is related to inflammation and other kinds of disruptions of the functioning of the airways. It inhibits the activation of guanylate cyclase which is nitric oxide-dependent. Guaifenesin is an expectorant which reduces adhesiveness and surface tension of congealed mucus in the upper respiratory tract to increase the flow of mucus, stimulating and increasing efficiency of the cilia to remove the accumulated mucus. This medication causes pharmacological effects. It is assigned to stimulation via beta-adrenergic receptors of the intracellular adenylyl cyclase.
