How does this medication work?
It is an agent that causes diffusion of thick mucus. Uncontrolled quantity of nitric oxide (NO) is related to inflammation and other kinds of disruptions of the functioning of the airways. The drug inhibits the activation of guanylate cyclase which is nitric oxide-dependent. It also works as a β2 adrenergic receptor that results in an increase of cyclic AMP. Increased AMP leads to activation of protein kinase A which again prevents phosphorylation of myosin. All this mechanism leads to the relaxation of smooth muscles. The medication is an expectorant which reduces adhesiveness and surface tension of congealed mucus in the upper respiratory tract to increase the flow of mucus, stimulating and increasing efficiency of the cilia to remove the accumulated mucus.
