About Cefotaxime

Cefotaxime, is a cephalosporin antibiotic, a type of 'broad spectrum' anti-biotic which acts against numerous Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. This medicine is primarily prescribed for treatment of susceptible infection in respiratory tract, skin and skin structure.

Specifically it treats joint infections, meningitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, pneumonia, sepsis, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea, and cellulitis. It is administered into the body by injecting it either into a vein or a muscle.

The recommended dose in adults is 0.5 grams a day to 12 grams divided into multiple doses per day. It is advised not to take this medicine if one is hypersensitive to Cefotaxime or other cephalosporins. Some medical conditions may interact with it, so inform your doctor if you have any of the medical conditions mentioned below :

  • If you are already taking any medication, dietary supplement or herbal preparation.
  • If you are allergic to food, medicines or other any other substances.
  • If you have had a history of stomach or bowel problems, kidney problems or poor nutrition.

The dose your doctor recommends will be based on your age, weight, kidney function, other medications you are taking and how you respond to this medicine.

Continue this medication for the full time prescribed, even if the symptoms seem to disappear after few days. Discontinuing the medication too early may result in recurrance of the infection.
