How does this medication work?
This medication behaves as an alpha2 adrenergic receptor agonist. It possesses central hypotensive and anti arrhythmogenic effects. Primarily, it works by stimulating the receptors present in the brain stem. Here it shows sympatholytic effect, thus inhibits the noradrenaline, ATP, renin and neuropeptide Y release. This leads to a decrease in peripheral vascular resistance, causing a lowering of blood pressure. For producing secondary effects, it acts as an imidazoline-1 receptor in the brain.
