Compound Sodium Lacate Solution
About Compound Sodium Lacate Solution
Compound Sodium Lacate Solution is especially useful for the control of excessive vomiting, diarrhoea , dehydration or in infectious diseases such as cholera. It is administered either through an intravenous fluid injection or through a process known as electrolyte therapy. This medicine may be provided through a hypotonic glucose and saline solution to ease the process of ingestion. It is mainly used to replenish fluids and restore the electrolyte balance of the body, and also provides relief from acidity.
Compound Sodium Lacate Solution is a solution made from sodium chloride, sodium lactate, potassium chloride and calcium chloride in water and is also called Hartmann’s solution. It is also used to compensate for blood loss due to trauma, surgery or in burn cases. Since the lactate in the solution is metabolised in the liver to bicarbonate, it counters metabolic acidosis and maintains a stable blood pH better than saline.
Compound Sodium Lacate Solution should not be used with ceftriaxone because it increases the risk of ceftriaxone-calcium salt precipitation that could prove to be fatal, especially to new-born children. It also should not be used for maintaining electrolytes in the body in long term use because the concentration of sodium and potassium in the solution is too low for daily electrolyte requirements. Further, since lactate is converted to bicarbonate, long term use can lead to alkalosis.
