This medication is usually prescribed as a long-term treatment of angina pectoris. It slows beta-oxidation of fatty acids by blocking long-chain 3-ketoacyl-CoA thiolase. This increases glucose oxidation. In an ischaemic cell, the energy obtained during glucose oxidation requires less oxygen consumption than in the beta-oxidation process.

It is used for the treatment of symptoms such as severe pain in the chest, ringing in the ears, inner ear problem and other conditions.
