Desogestrel
About Desogestrel
Desogestrel is used as an oral contraceptive and its main function is prevention of pregnancy. It is a synthetic progestin. In a normal menstrual cycle after ovulation, progesterone is secreted by the ovary to prevent further release of eggs.
In the case of pregnancy, progesterone levels remain high to maintain uterine endometrium and in absence of pregnancy progesterone levels fall. By maintaining high levels of progesterone artificially, Desogestrel tricks the body into thinking that ovulation has already occurred, which in turn inhibits the release of eggs.
This drug binds to progesterone receptors in target cells and inhibits the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone and prevents the surge in luteinizing hormone before menstruation.
This drug should not be used if:
- You are allergic to any of its active ingredients.
- You suffer from liver problems like jaundice.
- You suffer from pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis or progesterone/estrogen-sensitive cancers like ovarian cancer and breast cancer.
