About Dimenhydrinate

Dimenhydrinate, an over-the-counter medication, applicable in the treatment of nausea, vomiting as well as dizziness caused due to motion and also for treatment of Meniere's disease (an inner ear related disorder with symptoms like extreme dizziness, hearing loss, ringing in ears, loss of balance). It is an antihistamine and anticholinergic. It is available as a tablet or chewable tablet for oral ingestion.

For an adult injectable dosage is 50 to 100 mg every 4 hours and if taken orally then 100 mg every 8 to 12 hours (as required) with a maximum of 400 mg within 24 hours.

Before taking Dimenhydrinate one should consult a doctor or pharmacist if they are allergic to it and in case of taking chewable tablets one should go for consulting a doctor if they are allergic to tartrazine or aspirin. Common side effects incude constipation, dry nose/mouth/throat, drowsiness, blurred vision. While the more serious side effects include difficulty during urination, irregular or fast heartbeat, mood changes and need doctor’s consultation. Symptoms of over dosage may include weakness, severe drowsiness, severe mood changes (such as excitement), hallucinations, muscle twitching, tremor, seizures, loss of consciousness and even coma.
