This medication is a semisynthetic estrogen which enters the cells and binds to the estrogen receptors and forms a complex that enters the cell nucleus and bind to the DNA. It activates the DNA transcription of genes that are involved in estrogenic cellular responses. Levonorgestrel is a nortestosterone derivative and is a potent inhibitor of ovulation. This medicine also prevents fertilization of the egg and reduces the secretion of hormones like follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone.
