About Flavoxate
Flavoxate is an antispasmodic to provide symptomatic relief of dysuria, nocturia, suprapubic pain, urgency, and incontinence due to detrusor instability and hyperreflexia in elderly with cystitis, urethritis, urethrocystitis, urethrotrigonitis, and prostatitis.
It is mainly used as a smooth muscle relaxant. It has anticholinergic and antispasmodic properties. Thus helpful in controlling urinary incontinence, nocturia, and dysuria and stimulates muscle contractions in the bladder for patients who suffer from discomfort and pain during urination.
Flavoxate works by binding to and inhibiting muscarinic receptors. This modifies the micturition centre in the brain and leads to suppression of the micturition reflex and increase in the capacity of the urinary bladder. It also stimulates the pertussis toxin-sensitive G protein-coupled receptors and inhibits the formation of cyclic AMP which results in the suppression of isovolumetric urinary bladder contractions.
