How does this medication work?
This syrup is a combination medication that works multiple levels. Firstly, it works on alpha-adrenergic receptors to a great extent and alpha-adrenergic receptors to a lesser extent. It stimulates beta2-adrenergic receptors and de-stresses bronchial smooth muscle, thereby ameliorating the symptoms of nasal/sinus congestion. Secondly, Dextromethorphan works as a decongestant by suppressing the nervous system and the part of your brain which is responsible for coughing. It does not really thin the mucus, but certainly provides relief. Also, this medication selectively inhibits the peripheral H1 receptors thereby reducing the histamine levels in the body. It specifically acts on allergies caused in the stomach and intestine, blood vessels and airways leading to the lungs. Lastly, menthol works by triggering the TRPM8 receptors in the skin that are cold-sensitive. It does that by blocking calcium currents of the neuronal membrane. Through kappa-opoid receptor agonism, it can also produce analgesic characteristics.
