Pheniramine
About Pheniramine
Pheniramine is used for treating allergic conditions like urticaria or hay fever. It is also used as an over-the-counter sleeping pill similar to other sedating antihistamines. The active constituent of this medication is an alkylamine derivative, a histamine H1-receptor antagonist with anticholinergic and moderate sedative effects. Besides all of its uses, it is also found in eyedrops used to treat allergic conjunctivitis.
Pheniramine is usually marketed in combination with other medications, instead of being sold as a stand-alone drug. For example, Neo Citran contains Pheniramine in its composition.
Dosage includes half to one tablet 3 times daily for adults and half a tablet 3 times daily for children (5 to 10 years of age). Pheniramine is not recommended for children under the age of 5 years. To avoid travel sickness, an individual is advised to take the first dose at least 30 minutes prior to travelling.
Side effects of using Pheniramine include drowsiness or bradycardia. Overdose may cause sleep disorders and even seizures if taken in combination with alcohol. It may also lead to lowered levels of adrenaline (epinephrine) which may in turn cause loss of consciousness, if taken in combination with cortisol in long term and hence should be avoided.
