Phenylbutazone

Prescription vs OTC : Prescription by Doctor required

About Phenylbutazone

Phenylbutazone is generally available in the form of powder. It is used to treat rheumatism, gout and similar other rheumatoid disorders in man, especially those casing musculoskeletal weakness.

Side effects of Phenylbutazone include visible water retention, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, dizziness, rashes, ringing in the ears and involuntary quivering. Serious adverse effects like blurred vision, allergic reactions, heart failure, depression, loss of hearing, liver problems, kidney problems and sensitivity to sunlight are rare, although they have been observed.

Medication must be stopped at the first sign of gastrointestinal tract infections, liver problems like jaundice and blood dyscrasia. Routine blood tests must be conducted every two weeks to check the count of white blood cells, as this medicine is known to have caused agranulocytosis. Therapy should be stopped immediately and remedial measures should be taken if there is any significant fall in the white blood cell count, relative decrease in the number of granulocytes, or black stools are observed. Inflammatory conditions should also be treated with specific anti-infective therapy.

Dosage varies according to the response given by the individual. Doses are reduced as symptoms regress. While treatment is begun with a relatively larger dose, it is reduced as time goes by.
