About Rifabutin

Rifabutin is commonly administered orally, and is available in the form of tablets. It is an anti-mycobacterial agent, and is used for the prevention and treatment of the disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease in patients who have an advanced stage of HIV infection.

The usual dosage of this drug is 300 mg daily, taken once in a day. However, if you are a patient with an increased tendency to experience nausea, vomiting, or any other form of gastrointestinal upsets, you are advised to take 150 mg of Rifabutin twice in day, preferably along with food. Exercise caution while taking this medicine if you are suffering from severe kidney failure.

Commonly observed side effects of this medication appear to be rashes, a significant fall in the number of neutrophils, and gastrointestinal intolerance. Falls in the counts of blood cells are an observed side effect of this medication. Hence, your doctor must be given regular reports of your blood cell counts.

Rifabutin must not be given for MAC prophylaxis to patients suffering from active tuberculosis. If you develop symptoms for active tuberculosis while taking this medicine, please consult your doctor immediately. You will be given an effective combination regimen of medications to treat tuberculosis.

    How does this medication work?

    Rifabutin kills Mycobacterium avium complex, thereby preventing tuberculosis. It works through blocking DNA-dependent RNA polymerase in gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. As a result RNA synthesis is curbed and cell death occurs.
