About Sibutramine
Sibutramine, an oral anorexiant is used to treat obesity with reduced calorie diet and exercise. It works by the regulation of the neurotransmitters in the brain that reduce hunger and hence help in weight maintenance. A reduction of 5-10% of weight from their baseline is observed in patients medicated with Sibutramine.
Sibutramine should not be used if the person is above 65 years of age or has taken monoamine oxidase inhibitor, selective serotonin inhibitor or another appetite suppressant within the last 14 days. Moreover, persons with severe high blood pressure, heart or blood vessel problems, eating disorder, severe liver or kidney problems, transient ischemic attack or stroke should also avoid taking the medicine.
Initial dosage of Sibutramine includes oral ingestion of 10mg once a day. In cases of insufficient weight loss, the dose might be increased up to 15mg once a day. However, an increase in dose more than 15mg is not recommended. This drug should not be administered to individuals with severe renal dysfunction.
Side effects include insomnia, constipation, pharyngitis, nausea, arthralgia, nervousness, rhinitis, sinusitis, dyspepsia, headache, dry mouth, asthenia, anorexia, back pain, increased appetite, flu syndrome and accidental injury.
