About Somatostatin
Somatostatin is a growth hormone-inhibiting hormone that is used in the treatment of carcinoid tumours, acute bleeding of oesophagal varices, and acromegaly.
It is also helpful in the treatment of acute pancreatitis. Somatostatin functions by thwarting the effect of specific natural hormones such as growth hormones and serotonin.
Somatostatin could be administered subcutaneously as well as intravenously. The recommended dosage of Somatostatin is 250mcg as an I.V bolus injection over a period of 3-5 minutes at an infusion rate of 3mg/12 hour.
Some individuals may also experience side effects of Somatostatin like nausea, slow heart rate, abdominal discomfort, flushing, palpitations, chills, diarrhoea, fatigue, skin rash, indigestion, and pain at the injection site.
Additionally, women who do not wish to conceive need to practice a contraceptive method while taking Somatostatin. It is also not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women unless absolutely necessary.
It is advised to consult a doctor before taking Somatostatin, especially in case of aged people. You should avoid Somatostatin if you are having hypersensivity to the drug or if you are having a condition of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.
