Tigecycline
About Tigecycline
Tigecycline is an antibiotic which can be injected into the body. The drug cures a number of bacterial infections, by effectively binding over bacterial ribosomes that yield the protein in the cells. This binding action stops the bacterial ribosomes from producing such proteins that help in their multiplication. It should be noted that this drug merely prevents the multiplication of the bacteria, it does not destroy the bacteria on the whole.
When considering the most common side effects of Tigecycline, you can experience nausea accompanied with vomiting, as well as diarrhea. Various other side effects also include swelling and irritation, irregular heart rate, development of infections and pain at the site of the injection. Just like other antibiotics, Tigecycline can also lead to side effects such as higher sensitivity to light and discolored teeth.
The medicine is administered through an IV for about half an hour to one hour. The first dose may be as high as 100 mg, and the following doses may be about 50 mg given after a 12 hour interval. In case of severe skin infections or intra-abdominal infections, the time period of the treatment is about 5 to 14 days. In case of bacterial infections like pneumonia, which are community acquired, the treatment period may last for about a week or a fortnight.
Women who are pregnant or trying to conceive should discuss the benefits and risks of the drug with their health care providers before taking it. This is because Tigecycline is known to be harmful for the fetus. Even lactating mothers should be careful when taking Tigecycline.
