Trimethoprim
About Trimethoprim
Trimethoprim is an antibacterial which is available in the form of 100 mg tablets. It is administered orally. It is mainly used to deal with simple cases of urinary tract infections.
The usual oral dosage for adults is 100mg every 12 hours, or 200mg every 24 hours, for 10 days. Side effects of Trimethoprim include rashes, pruritus, and skin sensitivity especially on exposure to sunlight. However, these effects are mild and moderate, and appear 7 to 14 days after the beginning of the treatment. Trimethoprim may have an effect on the production of red blood cells, especially if taken in large doses, or over prolonged periods of time. Signs such as a sore throat, fever or pallor are symptoms of an overdose. Care should be taken while administering this medicine to patients with folate deficiency.
Since Trimethoprim may interfere with the metabolism of folic acid in the body, this medicine should be given to pregnant women only if the potential benefits of the medicine justify, and outweigh, the potential risk to the foetus. Similarly, caution must be taken while administering Trimethoprim to a lactating woman. This medicine is contraindicated in individuals that have hypersensitivity to it, are anaemic and have folic deficiency.
