How does this medication work?
This medication is a first-generation antihistamine, which is used to prevent the allergic symptoms from conditions such as urticaria and rhinitis. This drug binds to the histamine H1 receptor, which prevents the action from endogenous histamine. It also works as an anthelmintic drug and is specifically active against parasites. Patients with loiasis and lymphatic filariasis find diethylcarbamazine very effective. The drug basically sensitizes microfilariae to phagocytosis thereby allowing the leukocytes to target and destroy the parasites.
