About Vasopressin
Vasopressin resembles the anti-diuretic hormone, which is generally produced by the pituitary gland of the body. The drug increases water retention in the body, by reducing urine formation. It helps the kidneys to absorb water effectively. Vasopressin effectively increases blood pressure of the body as it narrows blood vessels.
Doctors generally prescribe Vasopressin for the treatment of diabetes insipidus, which occurs when the pituitary gland is not able to secrete the anti-diuretic hormone.
Before you start taking Vasopressin, inform your doctor about any medical conditions that you may suffer from. They include coronary heart disease, asthma, migraine headaches, epilepsy and kidney problems. Pregnant women should only take Vasopressin as per the doctor’s advice. The drug can cause early labour if taken during the final months of the pregnancy.
The drug is generally injected through IV into a vein, or administered into the muscle. The injection is generally given by a doctor or nurse at the hospital or clinic.
Some common side effects of this medicine are stomach cramps, paleness of the skin, sweating, gas and tremor in the hands and feet. Major side effects that one may experience are seizures, stupor, unconsciousness, problems with breathing and irregular heartbeat.
Symptoms of overdose include drowsiness, weight gain, confusion, listlessness, water intoxication. Water intoxication requires withdrawal of the drug; severe intoxication may require osmotic diuresis and loop diuretics.
