Xylometazoline

Prescription vs OTC : Prescription by Doctor not required

About Xylometazoline

Xylometazoline is prescribed to relive nasal congestion that may occur because of hay fever, common cold, allergies of the upper respiratory tract or even sinus. The drug also gets rid of any nasal discomfort that may occur due to dryness. Xylometazoline acts as a decongestant, thus it shrinks the mucous membrane of the nose by tightening the blood vessels. This in turn helps reduce congestion and makes breathing easier.

The drug should be used as per your doctor’s direction and advice. If the drug is in spray form, first clear your nose and tilt back. Place the spray at the opening of one nostril and close the other nostril with your finger. Squeeze the spray into your nostril and inhale deeply. After you are done using the spray, clean the tip of the can using hot water so as to prevent any contamination.

Certain facts should be kept in mind when using Xylometazoline, for instance only use the spray for about 3 days. If you need to use it for more days seek advice of your medical practitioner. If you use Xylometazoline for a long period of time occurrence of nasal congestion will tend to recur more frequently. Children below the age 12 years should not be taking Xylometazoline. Pregnant and breast feeding mothers should discuss the benefits and threats of taking the drug with their doctor.
