You have to show them by actually doing it yourself. Till then avoid using toothpaste. Just use simple brush.

Hi lybrate-user, brushing should be under parent's supervision for a minute then can be done by the kid. Non- floridated toothpaste should be used till age of 3.

It can lead to some problem but its always better if he spits, use a very small amount of toothpaste 1/4th - 1/2 the size of a pea, not more. The kid toothpaste are specially designed with reduced fluoride contents to prevent any problems with ingestion of the paste, but its always better if you put him to the habit of spitting.
