Amrinone
About Amrinone
Amrinone is used in the treatment of congestive heart failure. It is also known as inamrinone and is a type 3 pyridine phosphodiesterase inhibitor (PDE3). This medicine is a positive inotropic cardiotonic (CARDIOTONIC AGENTS) with vasodilator properties and has the ability to stimulate calcium ion influx into the cardiac cell.
Being a PDE3 drug, it acts in a similar way like that of a beta-agonist. It leads to an increase in cAMP and cGMP causing an increased calcium influx, resulting in an increased inotropic effect.
In the human body, Inamrinone and several metabolites (N-glycolyl, N-acetate, O-glucuronide, and N-glucuronide) are primarily excreted through the urine. Chemical interaction with precipitation occurs with amrinone and dextrose or furosemide. Thus drug mixing should be avoided.
