About Docosahexaenoic acid(DHA)
Docosahexaenoic acid(DHA) is a fatty acid found naturally in breast milk, and in the meat of most cold water fish like mackerel, salmon, halibut and cod liver. It is used as a supplement for premature infants, and in baby formulas for the first four months, to increase the child’s mental development. It is also in use for the treatment of dementia, coronary artery disease, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder as well as type 2 diabetes. It is also used in combination with Vitamin E and some oils to promote motor skills in children with a movement disorder known as dyspraxia. Docosahexaenoic acid(DHA) also appears to be effective in lowering cholesterol levels and unclogging blocked arteries. It may also help in the prevention and treatment of age-related macular disorder.
Docosahexaenoic acid(DHA) is generally found to be safe for most people. Possible side effects include intestinal gas, nausea, prolonged bleeding and easy bruising. When taken in fish oils, it could leave a fishy aftertaste, or result in nosebleeds, belching or stomach upsets. Taking Docosahexaenoic acid(DHA) along with food could help to reduce these adverse effects. You are advised not to overdose on this medicine. Taking more than 3 g per day could result in thinning of blood.
