About SHBG Test

The sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) tests may be used to evaluate men for low testosterone and women for excess testosterone production. Testing for albumin level and one or more other sex hormone such as prolactin, estradiol and luteinizing hormone may also help to diagnose and evaluate a patient’s existing balance of hormones. Increased SHBG levels may be seen in the following cases: Liver disease. Hyperthyroidism. Eating disorders. Decreased sex hormone production. Pregnancy.

Decreased SHBG levels may be seen in: Obesity. Polycystic ovary syndrome. Hypothyroidism. Androgen (steroid) use. Cushing disease.
