About Osmolality - Serum Test

A serum osmolality test measures the amount of chemicals dissolved in the liquid part i.e, serum of the blood. Chemicals affecting serum osmolality are sodium, chloride, bicarbonate, proteins, and sugar or glucose.Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) partly controls serum osmolality.
This test may be done to check :
1.the balance between the water and the chemicals in your blood.
2.severe dehydration or overhydration.
3.if your body is producing enough ADH.
4.the cause of coma or seizures.
5.if you have swallowed something poisonous, like rubbing alcohol, wood alcohol, or antifreeze.
