Acetaminophen is available over the counter as one of the most commonly used medication for pain relief (analgesic) and fever (antipyretics). It is also known as paracetamol. The vital organ which is involved in the liver in processing this medicine. Over dosage of this medicine may cause damage to the liver. The Acetaminophen Blood Test or very commonly known as Paracetamol Blood Test helps the doctor to know the level of acetaminophen drug in the blood. This test helps to know the level of over dose of the medicine in the blood and the risk of liver damage. It helps the doctor to take a decision regarding the treatment to be provided.

There is no preparation needed by the patient.

  • Some of the symptoms of the acetaminophen overdose include: Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea

Sample required: Blood Regular or standard venipuncture 7 mL of whole blood in the solid red top tube Some labs may only need as little as 1 mL (depends on assay) Do not use a serum separator tube If time of ingestion is known, draw lab 4 hours after so that it can be plotted on the nomogram Once the blood has clotted at room temperature, the red top tube is then centrifuged within 2 hours of receipt and the serum or plasma is transferred into vials for testing or freezing.
