Allergy - Oat Test

Allergy - Oat Test

also known as: Allergy Oat Enzyme Assay

Oat allergy is different from celiac disease. Celiac is all about gluten intolerance and oats don't always have gluten in them. When people develop this allergy they generally suffer through some common symptoms like running nose, cough, sneezing, nausea, sore eye, headache etc. Anaphylactic response is the most common and dangerous reaction to the oat allergy. An anaphylactic shock is a combination of near fatal allergy symptoms, such as severe skin swelling and irritation, irritation of the digestive organs, palpitation and difficulty breathing. The ELISA test measures the amount of allergen-specific antibodies in your blood.

Wear comfortable clothes which are either sleeveless or have sleeves which can be easily rolled up. This is done to ensure that the elastic band can be tied on the arm easily. Wrapping an elastic band will make the drawing of blood easier for the doctor. You are not required to take any prior precautions or doing anything out of your regular routine you can follow your normal routine as usual. There is no need to make changes in your meals or water intake. If any special precaution is required (it may differ from case to case) the doctor will let you know while recommending the test.

This test detects and measures antibodies in blood. If any person has developed allergy from oats or any other food substance it can be detected.

The arm is cleaned with an antiseptic.
• An elastic band is wrapped around your upper arm. It will obstruct the flow of blood. Further it will make the veins below the band larger and will also make it easier to put a needle into the vein.
• Using alcohol, the needle site is to be cleaned.
• The needle is slowly inserted into the vein.
• A tube is attached to the needle to collect the blood drawn from the vein.
• When the required blood is collected, the elastic band is removed.
• A gauze pad or cotton ball is placed over the needle site while removing the needle.
• Pressure is applied on to the site before placing the bandage.
