Allergy - Pecanut Test

The peanut allergy test is used to detect the allergy that you develop to peanut and peanut-contained foods. This test can be done in two ways: blood test and skin test. The blood test measures the presence of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to specific foods, for example peanut. During the skin test, an allergist places a drop of solution containing the food allergen on your skin. Using a small plastic probe or needle, the doctor gently pricks or scratches the skin to allow a tiny amount of the solution to enter just below the surface.

Prior to visiting the doctor, be prepared of the following: Tell your doctor what happened after you ate peanuts or peanut-containing food, including how long it took for a reaction to occur. Make a list of all medications you are taking, including vitamins or supplements. Take a family member or friend along, if possible. The person who comes with you may remember something you missed or forgot. Write down any questions you have.

As mentioned above, the peanut allergy test detects the following: About 50-60 percent of all blood tests and skin prick tests yields a “false positive” result. This means that the test shows positive even though you are not really allergic to the food being tested. These results occur for two reasons: The test may be measuring your response to the undigested food proteins. The test may be detecting proteins that are similar among foods but do not trigger allergic reactions. The test is extremely helpful when the results are interpreted in the context of your medical history.

The discussion with your doctor includes some of the following: The doctor may ask you to keep a food diary of your eating habits, symptoms and medications. The doctor may ask you to eliminate peanuts for some time. A skin test may be performed by placing food on your skin, which is then pricked with a needle. If you are allergic, you develop some reaction. A blood test may be required to measure your immune system's response to particular foods.
