12 Tips to Relieve Your Runny Nose or Nasal Congestion

What is nasal congestion?

Nasal congestion is a condition in which the nasal passages become blocked or stuffed up, making it difficult to breathe through the nose. It can be caused by allergies, colds, sinus infections, or other medical conditions.

What are the signs and symptoms of nasal congestion?

The signs and symptoms of nasal congestion include:

Discomfort or pain in the nose and cheeks. ;

Thick mucus accumulation in the throat or dripping from the back of the nose.

Blockage of the airways resulting in difficulty breathing through the nose, accompanied by a whistling or wheezing sound when you exhale through your nose. ;

Postnasal drip, which is thin watery fluid that drips down your throat from your nasal passage due to blocked sinuses that cause crusts to form on your tonsils.

One-sided facial pain caused by inflammation around your sinuses, accompanied by persistent headaches in some cases. ;

A feeling of fullness or pressure around your eyes, forehead, and cheeks due to swollen sinus cavities pushing against them.

What are possible complications of nasal congestion?

Sinus infections: if a cold or allergies cause the nasal congestion to last for weeks at a time, it can cause inflammation and swelling that block mucous from draining from the sinuses leading to sinus infections.

Ear infections: congestion can force mucous into the ears, preventing them from draining properly and allowing bacteria to grow in middle ear cavities leading to painful ear infections.

Respiratory tract infections: an infection such as bronchitis or pneumonia are serious complications that may arise if colds and allergies linger long enough.

Asthma attacks: according to some studies, untreated nasal congestion may increase asthma severity or lead to compromised lung function.

12 tips to relieve your runny nose or nasal congestion

Try natural remedies: some of the natural therapies you might try are:

Boil a few cloves of garlic in a glass of milk and drink it before bedtime.

Add some black pepper powder to a glass of warm water and drink it twice a day to reduce congestion.

Boil some basil leaves in water for 5 minutes, strain it, add honey to taste, and drink it twice a day for relief from congestion.

Make an herbal tea by adding some cardamom powder, cinnamon powder, ginger powder and clove powder to boiling water, strain it, add honey to taste, and drink it twice a day for relief from congestion.

Take over-the-counter decongestants: over-the-counter decongestants like pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine can help reduce inflammation and provide your nose with temporary relief.

Increase your fluid intake: drink lots of warm fluids throughout the day, such as herbal teas and soups. This will help to thin mucus and make it easier to expel from the nose.

Stay warm: cold temperatures can cause nasal membranes to swell, making congestion worse. Keeping warm helps reduce inflammation in the nasal passages, allowing for better airflow through them.

Avoid allergens: if allergies are the cause of your nasal congestion, you will want to avoid contact with known allergens as much as possible to prevent further symptoms from occurring. This includes pollen, dust mites, molds and pet dander.

Use a neti pot or other nasal irrigation device: nasal irrigation devices rinse away mucus and pollen from the inside of your nose, providing relief from congestion and other allergy-related symptoms.

Apply essential oils: certain essential oils like peppermint oil or eucalyptus oil have been found to provide relief from irritation caused by colds or allergies due to their anti-inflammatory properties. You can apply these oils directly on the area or inhale them through aromatherapy for best results.

Try over-the-counter antihistamines: medications such as diphenhydramine (benadryl) or loratadine (claritin) reduce histamine production, which can help reduce swelling in your nasal passages and allow you to breathe more easily.

Suck on menthol candies: menthol candies act as an expectorant which helps open up nasal passageways by thinning out mucus secretions. Also sucking on something strong will also stimulate salivation which moisturizes irritated membranes in the throat and sinuses providing some relief from symptoms of congestion.

Perform steam inhalation therapy: steam inhalation therapy is often recommended for relieving sinus congestions due to its impactful effects. Simply sitting with your head bent over a pan of boiling water wearing a towel over it while breathing deeply is an effective way of engaging this method although there are different varieties that could be done involving use of herbs/essential oils etc, depending upon one s needs.

Avoid some foods: reduce consumption of sugar, processed food items which if taken excessively can cause inflammation resulting in congestive symptoms in the body; so switch these items out for fresh fruits and vegetables instead.

Exercise: exercise regularly as this helps open nasal passages by increasing circulation throughout the body.

If the aforementioned measures are ineffective, you may need to consider surgical treatments.

What are the surgical treatments for nasal congestion?

Surgical treatments for nasal congestion include:

Endoscopic sinus surgery: carried out by inserting an endoscope (fibreoptic camera) into the nose and using micro-instruments to remove any blockages or enlarge sinus openings. This is sometimes known as functional endoscopic sinus surgery (fess).

Septoplasty: this procedure involves straightening the septum on the inside of the nose to reduce any obstruction in breathing due to a deviated septum.

Turbinate reduction: this procedure reduces the size of enlarged turbinates that are causing nasal congestion by cutting them away from their blood supply and allowing them to shrink back to normal size.

Balloon sinuplasty: this involves inserting a balloon into blocked nasal passages and inflating it to remove any blockages and open up passageways for better air flow through the nose.

Best doctors to consult for nasal congestion?

Otolaryngologist: an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor) or a specialist in allergic rhinitis, are best to consult for nasal congestion. An otolaryngologist diagnoses and treats the diseases that affect the organs of the upper body such as noses, ears and throats. ;

Allergy specialist: an allergy specialist diagnoses and treats disorders related to allergies, like allergic rhinitis which causes allergic reactions related to the nose including nasal congestion.

General practitioner: a person can also consult a general practitioner if they have mild symptoms of nasal congestion as they can advise treatments such as decongestive medications or other methods of symptom management.

Schneiderian Papilloma - Know More About It!
Schneiderian papilloma is also called sino-nasal papilloma. It is a harmless epithelial neoplasm and happens in the sinonasal tract.

According to the World Health Organization, there are three categories of Schneiderian papilloma-

Inverted papilloma

Exophytic papilloma

Oncocytic papilloma

Inverted Papilloma

It is the most common type of papilloma. It occurs in the lateral nasal wall or paranasal. It happens more frequently in females than in men. It normally happens to people in their 50s and 60s. Its association with the Human Papilloma Virus is both high risk and low risk. The architectural pattern is inverted (endophytic). The nature of the epithelial lining is squamous, transitional or respiratory. It has very little possibility of transforming into a malignant papilloma (nearly 5-15%)

Exophytic Papilloma

It is the second most frequent type of Schneiderian papilloma. It occurs at the nasal septum. It is much more frequent in men than in women. It sets in when a person is in his/her 30s, 40s or 50s. It has a low-risk association with HPV. Its architectural pattern is exophytic (filiform). And its epithelial lining is squamous, transitional or respiratory. It has no possibility of becoming malignant.

Oncocytic Papilloma

It has the least common type of Schneiderian papilloma. It happens in the lateral nasal wall or paranasal sinus. It is equally prevalent among both men and women. A person is likely to contract it in his/her 50s or 60s. It has no association with HPV. The architectural is exophytic or endophytic. Its epithelial lining is oncocytic. It has a 4-17% risk of turning malignant.

The incident rate of .74 to 2.3 % of every 100,000 people. Some common symptoms associated with Schneiderian papilloma nasal congestion, runny nose, nasal blockage, and epistaxis.

Schneiderian papilloma should not be ignored. Consult a doctor who will prescribe the right medicines.

Atrial Fibrillation - Types, Symptoms & Treatment Of It!
We all know about the heartbeat, which is produced by the opening and closing of the valves in the heart, which in turn controls our blood flow. There is a regular pattern to this beat, and when, due to various reasons, it becomes irregular, it is known as arrhythmia. Atrial fibrillation, known shortly as AFib, is one of the common types of arrhythmia.

Why AFib: The heart has an electrical impulse system, which controls the opening/closing of its valves. Due to various changes, be it lifestyle, dietary, or regular wear and tear, this electrical system is affected and so the valves do not function properly. This leads to altered rhythm, and when it happens on the right side of the heart, in the valves between the two atria, it is known as atrial fibrillation.

Signs and Symptoms: It is not something which shows up as soon as the onset happens. It is a gradual condition, and many people with AFib may go for months with no symptoms. There could be general symptoms like fatigue and headaches. Gradually, more symptoms like heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, occasional chest pain, or fainting set in. It is usually when workup for some other disease is being done.

Monitoring the pulse or heartbeat is one of the best ways to keep a check on the condition.

Types: There are different forms of it paroxysmal, persistent, and permanent. In the first one, there are brief bursts of AFib lasting less than 7 days. With gradual progression, symptoms are more frequent and last longer, converting into persistent AFib, which lasts longer than 7 days. If the condition is longstanding and the doctor (as well as the patient) have decided not to treat it, it is permanent AFib.

Risk Factors: The chances of developing AFib increase with family history, age, obesity, smoking, hyperthyroidism, chronic lung diseases, and sleep apnea.

Living with AFib: It is a longstanding condition, and the following precautions are necessary, which are generally heart-healthy.

Quit Smoking: In addition to the multiple benefits of quitting, managing AFib is one.

Diet Changes: Change to a heart-healthy diet with whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, increased fish oils, reduced fat, reduced salt and sugar etc.

Work It Out: Get into an exercise regimen. Discuss with your doctor to identify and agree on the type and level of exercise. This helps manage weight and stress, both essential for controlling AFib.

Manage Alcohol Consumption: Avoid excess consumption of alcoholic beverages. Avoid them completely if they trigger symptoms.

If you have the risk factors for AFib, implementing these changes earlier than the onset of symptoms can help delay progress and reduce severity of the symptoms.

Allergic Rhinitis - Know Forms Of It!
An estimated 10 to 30 percent of people across the world suffer from Allergic rhinitis. Allergic rhinitis, more commonly known as hay fever, is a condition wherein the immune system overly responds to allergens resulting in inflammation in the nose. As you might be aware, an allergen is typically a harmless substance present in the surroundings causing an uncomfortable allergic reaction.

Following is a detailed account of the condition.

Symptoms-
Some of the most common symptoms of allergic rhinitis include,

Sneezing
Stuffy and runny nose
Persistent coughing
Itchy and watery eyes
Sore throat
Frequent headaches
Dark circles under the eyes
And, symptoms associated with eczema
Further, it also results in hives and excessive fatigue. An allergic person is likely to feel many of these symptoms within a few minutes of coming into contact with an allergen. Some symptoms, such as recurrent fatigue and headaches can only happen when there is long-term exposure to allergens. There are some people, who rarely undergo any signs, and this happens when a person is exposed to the allergens in massive quantities.

Causes of Allergic Rhinitis:
When the body comes in contact with the allergen, it triggers the release of histamine which is a natural chemical that defends the body from the allergen. This histamine can lead to allergic rhinitis and the associated symptoms which may range from a blocked or a runny nose to itchy eyes. Common allergens include pollen, dust mites, animal dander, grass pollen, and mold.

There are two variants of allergic rhinitis- seasonal and perennial.

Seasonal- Seasonal allergies usually occur during specific seasons owing to the response to outdoor allergens. For example, during a specific time in the year such as spring, the pollen can cause allergies in a person. Also, when trees and flowers release pollens during the fall and summer, seasonal allergic rhinitis can be seen on the rise.
Perennial- On the other hand, perennial allergens tend to linger all-round the year, and pet dander, mold or dust mites come under perennial allergic rhinitis causing allergens.
Diagnosing and treating allergic rhinitis-
When a person is suffering from minor allergies, a physical exam may be required. But a doctor may also perform some tests for identifying the best course of treatment as well as prevention plan for a particular patient. A skin prick test is one of the best ways to determine whether you have allergic rhinitis.

This health issue can be treated in a variety of ways which range from home remedies to medications to alternative therapies. Common medications include antihistamines, decongestants and nasal sprays and eye drops.

Staying away from a known allergen is the best possible way to prevent allergic rhinitis. When diagnosed, it is necessary to consult your doctor as the condition may sometimes lead to complications.

Sinusitis - How To Administer It?

Sinusitis - How To Administer It?
The inflammation of the cavities around nasal passage is known as sinusitis. When the cavities are full of fluid, germs attach themselves to the fluids, which give rise to infections. Some of the causes of sinusitis are common colds, allergic rhinitis, nasal polyps and deviated septum.

There are 4 different types of sinusitis:

1. Acute sinusitis: It remains for about 4 weeks or less. It is usually characterized by a runny nose and pain in the face which will stay for at least 10 to 14 days.

2. Sub acute sinusitis: It is almost like the acute sinusitis but stays longer for about 4 to 8 weeks.

3. Chronic sinusitis: The inflammation, in this case, lasts about 8 weeks, sometimes longer than that.

4. Recurrent sinusitis: In this, the sinusitis attack keeps occurring all through the year.

At times, to clear up the blocked sinuses, surgery is mandatory. This can be painful hence many are hesitant to go through with a surgery. If you want to control sinusitis so that it doesn't reach the limit where you have to go through a surgery, here are some tips of what you might be able to do regularly to clear your chances of controlling this:

1. Take steam: This is the most common and easy way to control sinusitis. The steam helps to break down the excess mucus in the nasal passage and also reduces the inflammation of the sinuses. All you need is water. Heat it up to the required temperature and then inhale the steam. You will get a lot of relief if you do this regularly.

2. Nasal Irrigation: This is basically the process of flushing the infected and stale mucus out of the nasal cavity. Take a liter of sterile water, mix one tablespoon of kosher salt and baking soda each. Then with the help of a syringe or a neti pot, wash your nostrils with the solution. The mucus will start coming out and your nasal cavity will clear out.

3. Use warm washcloths: Lie down and place a warm washcloth (a washcloth dipped in warm water and wringed) on your forehead and nose region. The warmth from the washcloth will break down the mucus and clear the congestion.
