Allergy - Rice Test

Rice is one of the food items that is consumed all over the world. Though rice is the common food, there are evidences as well as reports indicating that people get allergic by consuming rice. Rice allergy can be seen more in countries in eastern Asia. In countries like China and Japan, rice is used as in daily basis and consumed in large quantity and hence, the evidences for rice allergy are common in these countries. The symptoms for rice allergy can be seen in children as well as in adults. The following are the symptoms for rice allergy:

  • Diarrhea and vomiting
  • Atopic dermatitis and Atopic dermatitis with ocular
  • Eczema
  • Asthma
The symptoms may also result in cramping or similar pain, angioedema, rhinoconjunctivitis, rhinitis, and dyspnea.

There is no special preparation required before providing the blood sample to make sure the quality of the sample. You can check with your doctor for any preparation before visiting the lab.

The interpretations for the rice allergy is to check the IgE levels provided in KU/L, which refer to kilo units per liter. The presence of IgE antibodies provide the immune response to allergens associated to the allergic diseases. If your test reports indicate the IgE value as less than 0.35 KU/L, then it means negative and there is no rice allergic indication is found. If your test reports indicate the IgE value between 0.70 and 17.4, then it indicates positive and allergic indication is found. The values beyond 17.4 indicate strongly positive and it occurs to people in a rare situation. There is no exact treatment available for the rice allergy and the only solution is to reduce rice contents in your diet. You can check with your doctor with the diet.

Approximately 1 mm to 3 mm blood sample is taken from you. After you visit the lab, the lab technician or the nurse cleans your skin using a cotton or an alcohol pad. The blood sample needs to be taken from the needle. It is recommended to check if the nurse or the lab technician uses a brand new disposable syringe and needle. The blood is taken from you by inserting the needle from your skin. The sample is then saved in a container and the container is marked with your name. The blood is then used for testing. You can collect your reports on the same day. Depending upon the lab, the reports may take up to 3 days.
