The 8 Most Common Food Allergies and their treatment

What are food allergies?

A food allergy is an abnormal response to a food triggered by the body's immune system. Almost any food can cause an allergy, but there are some common triggers including nuts, milk, eggs, soy, wheat, shellfish and peanuts.

Symptoms of food allergies range from mild reactions such as a skin rash or stomach ache to severe reactions such as anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis causes airways to swell shut and can be life threatening if not treated quickly.

What causes food allergies?

Food allergies are caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. For example, people may have inherited genes that make them more likely to develop certain allergic reactions when exposed to certain foods. ;

Additionally, exposure to certain substances in the environment or poor dietary habits may increase a person's risk for food allergies.

How are food allergies diagnosed?

Food allergies are typically diagnosed with an oral food challenge test or through blood tests that measure specific antibodies against particular foods in the blood serum.

If these tests show evidence of sensitization (i. E, the presence of antibodies to particular foods), then it is likely that the individual has a food allergy. ;

After diagnosis and confirmation testing of suspected allergens has been done it s very important that patients learn how best to avoid their specific trigger foods and what treatments they should have on-hand in case they do get exposed.

What are the signs and symptoms of food allergies?

The signs and symptoms of food allergies can vary widely, but usually involve some combination of hives, rash, itching, difficulty breathing, a decrease in blood pressure and/or tightness in the throat.

Some common symptoms of food allergies include:

Hives (itchy red spots)

Swelling in the face or tongue

Wheezing or breathing difficulties

Vomiting or abdominal pain

Itchy skin rashes such as eczema

Diarrhea

Runny nose or congestion

Headache/migraine

Anaphylaxis (a severe, life threatening allergic reaction)

What are possible complications of food allergies?

Food allergies can cause serious complications and reactions, ranging in severity from mild to life-threatening. ;

Possible complications include skin reactions such as hives, itching or swelling; respiratory symptoms such as coughing, wheezing or shortness of breath; digestive issues such as nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea; and anaphylaxis, a sudden and severe all-body reaction that can be life-threatening.

People with food allergies must be vigilant in reading food labels to avoid their particular allergens.

The 8 most common food allergies and their treatment

Eggs allergy: an immune system reaction to proteins in the egg whites or egg yolks. Treatment includes avoiding foods with eggs, as well as taking precautions like carrying and using an injectable epinephrine pen when eating out or travelling.

Milk allergy: an immune system response to the protein in cow's milk. Treatment involves avoiding dairy products, reading labels carefully and finding alternatives like lactose-free and soy milk products.

Peanuts/tree nuts allergy: an allergy to peanut or tree nut based products, such as walnuts, almonds or pistachios. Treatment includes avoiding foods containing these ingredients and seeking medical advice if necessary for severe reactions like anaphylaxis shock symptoms (e. G, swelling of the throat and tongue).

Wheat/gluten allergy: gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and other grains that can cause digestive issues for those with wheat allergies or celiac disease (an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten). Treatment includes following a gluten-free diet including whole grain grains such as quinoa, amaranth and millet, as well as avoiding processed foods that often contain gluten (e. G, breads and pastas).

Fish/shellfish allergy: allergies related to substances found in fish skin or shellfish meat or eggs can cause allergic reactions ranging from mild itching around the mouth to life-threatening anaphylactic shock symptoms (e. G, swelling of the throat). Treatment involves avoiding fish/shellfish products altogether or substituting them for non-allergenic foods like tofu depending on severity of reaction (s).

Soy allergy: allergy to proteins found in soybeans which are used commonly in many ready-made foods such as vegan cheese and certain types of breads/pastas due its high protein content.

Mustard allergy: this allergy is a reaction to mustard seeds & its products that contain mustard, such as mustard powder and prepared mustards. Allergic symptoms can include skin rashes, digestive issues, and anaphylaxis.

Sesame allergy: this allergy is a reaction to sesame seeds & its products that contain sesame, such as tahini. Sesame allergy can cause anaphylaxis.

;What are the surgical treatments for food allergies?

Surgical treatments for food allergies are relatively limited. Generally, the focus is not on surgical intervention, but rather on dietary and lifestyle modification to avoid the allergen altogether.

In severe cases where exposure is likely to occur, such as accidental ingestion in a restaurant or intentional ingestion by a patient with poor compliance with their diet, immunotherapy (oit) may be recommended by select allergists.

This entails gradual introduction of small amounts of the allergen into the patient's system to help their body become accustomed and tolerant over time. ;

Additionally, endoscopic hydrodissection with topical corticosteroids has recently been used as a potential therapy in certain cases of anaphylaxis, although effects have yet to be proven surefire or long term in nature.

Endoscopic hydro-dissection: endoscopic hydro-dissection is a minimally invasive procedure used to help diagnose and manage food allergies. This procedure involves the use of saline and water solution to dissect, identify, and eliminate tissue involved in the allergic reaction. This method can also be used to obtain a sample of the areas affected by allergy for further testing. With endoscopic hydro-dissection, physicians can more accurately diagnose food allergies and identify which foods are causing reactions so they can be avoided in the future.

Best doctors to consult for food allergies?

Allergists: an allergist is a doctor specifically trained to diagnose and treat allergies, asthma, and immunologic disorders. They use skin or blood tests to determine which food (s) is causing an allergic reaction and suggest personalized avoidance strategies.

Gastroenterologists: some gastroenterologists may specialize in food allergies unusually severe cases of food intolerance, which involve gastrointestinal difficulties including vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Dietitians: a dietitian can help patients with food allergies create an appropriate meal plan as well as provide dietary advice on how to make sure the diet includes the essential nutrients yet avoids foods that might trigger an allergy attack.

What are the causes of Breast Itching

Dermatologist, Patna
What are the causes of Breast Itching
Itching is also known as pruritus. It is a condition which causes irritating sensation and is usually uncontrollable that makes us scratch it to have some relief from it.

;

Itchy breast is quite common and usually occurs due to increase in the size of the breast which directly relates to weight gain. It can also be due to some allergies, skin infection or dry skin. Most commonly this itching will resolve on its own or by some home remedies and doesn't require any prescription from a doctor.

But in some cases there is a possibility of having itchiness followed by problems (symptoms) such as swelling, redness, pain, discharge of nipple etc. These symptoms are the same as the symptoms of cancer, so if any of these symptoms (problem) occurs consult a doctor immediately.

;

If breast itching is very intense or is from several weeks or doesn't improve with home remedies, consulting a doctor is important to find out (identify) the reason/cause of the itching so that proper treatment can be given on time and stop the problem from getting severe.

;

Breast itching can be caused by several reasons, some of the causes are as follows -

Increase in size of breast - the size of breast can get increased during pregnancy, due to puberty or due to gain in body weight which may cause itching.

Increasing size of breast during the time of pregnancy is very common which occurs due to the formation of hormones that prepares mothers for breastfeeding. ;

Increase in size due to puberty is normal and is caused due to change in hormones. Weight gain results in increased size of breast because of the accumulation of the fat tissues in that area.

Increase in breast size is normal and natural, itching caused by it usually resolves with time without any treatment. But if the cause of itchiness is weight gain, you should start exercising and have to get physically active to prevent the itchiness by preventing further increase in size.

Dryness - dry skin can lead to itchiness which is due to skin growth, exposure to sun, hot baths or from the use of skin products which may cause skin irritation. In this condition it is best to avoid the situation that triggers dry skin. Use of moisturizers helps in stimulating skin regrowth. Use of creams can help in improving the appearance of skin and reduce itchiness.

;

Skin diseases - itching is a common and usual symptom of many types of skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema etc. Itching may be accompanied by redness, swelling, scaling wounds, blistering etc. It can also affect other body parts such as arms, knees, legs, back etc. If any of these problems persists, it is recommended to consult a dermatologist for identifying the cause and have a treatment for it.

;

Infection- itching beneath and between the breasts is mostly caused due to fungal infection (candida sp. Fungus). This fungus is present in our body which forms naturally, but it overgrows if the immune system of the person is weak. Redness, peeling, burning and wounds can also be noticed on the infected portion of skin.

Women with large breasts are more likely to have itchy breasts due to fungal infections as moisture from sweat can lead to growth and development of fungus. If a breastfeeding baby has oral thrush (fungal infection in mouth) it can be transmitted to the mother's nipple which may cause infection.

Not only fungus causes infection, bacteria too cause infections. Breast itchiness can arise from bacteria which might be present in bra (just an example).

For the treatment of these infections one must consult a doctor. Normally doctors prescribe some creams and ointments to apply which contain antibiotics or antifungals. To be safe from infection caused by bacteria you should change your bra regularly, if not regularly then at least once in 2 day. Special attention to hygiene should be given around breasts because sweat in this area may stimulate the growth of microorganisms.

;

Medicine - itchiness can be caused because of the side effects of some medicines such as blood pressure medicine, aspirin etc. If you suspect this, consult your doctor about this who may prescribe you a lower dosage medicine or any substitute for it.

Menopause - during the time of menopause one experiences change in hormones which may lead to thinning of the skin on the boobs, that, in turn can make the area itchy. ;

Paget's disease - occurrence of paget's disease in breasts is not common. In most cases women above the age of 50 suffer from paget's disease in the breast. Its symptoms are itchiness in the breast and nipple, burning, nipple changes etc. In some serious cases skin change around the areola and ulceration of the nipple can be noticed. Diagnosis and treatment for this should be done immediately to avoid any other mild or severe complications.

;

Breast cancer - in some cases, itchiness of the breast can be a symptom of cancer, especially if itchiness is accompanied with symptoms such as redness, discharge of nipple, cutaneous rupture etc. If you have these symptoms consult an oncologist as soon as possible because if it is a breast cancer immediate treatment is required or it may create some serious life issues.

Conclusion - if you have itchiness in your breast you must have a treatment for it because itchiness causes irritation and discomfort. All the causes are explained above and treatment can be given accordingly to get rid of it. We hope that this article was helpful to you. Thank you for giving your valuable time. ;

Crabs (Pubic Lice) - Are they Contagious?
Pubic lice, also known as crabs , is a condition which occurs when certain parasitic insects are present in the genitals. These insects cause red spots to form on the vagina which result in itching. Crabs are also known to affect other parts of the body such as eyebrows, eyelashes and beards. This disease is extremely contagious in nature; it can be passed on from one person to another via sexual intercourse, hugging and kissing. In some cases, this condition can also be passed on from the parent to the child.

Symptoms
If you are affected by crabs then you will have itching and pain in the genitals. The saliva of the insect can cause allergic reactions on the skin, resulting in the itch. The itching tends to worsen at night. Bluish or red spots may appear on the affected area. The lice are usually around 2 cm long and can t be spotted easily.

Causes
Contrary to popular belief, pubic lice or carbs are not caused by poor hygiene. This disease spreads via bodily contact with an infected person and they feed on human blood to survive. Lice usually spread via sexual intercourse which may be anal, vaginal or oral.

Treatment for pubic lice
Treatments for pubic lice involve shampoos, lotions and insecticide creams. Some of the treatments for pubic lice need to be applied locally while others require full body treatment. Apart from following the treatment procedures, you need to take preventive measures to prevent infestation. Avoid sharing personal items such as toiletries, as lice can spread through it. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist.

Food Intolerance in Children - 5 Reasons Behind it
Sometimes, during consumption of certain food items many children get itchy throat, eyes, ears, asthma, sneezing, rashes, diarrhea and eczema. This can be due to food intolerance in children. It is a form of allergic disease in children. Every 1 out of 10 children suffer from food intolerance. These days, food allergies are becoming more and more common in children who are allergic to nuts, milk and eggs. In some cases it can also be life threatening. This condition is known as anaphylaxis. Milk and egg allergies are more common throughout the world.

Symptoms of food intolerance:

Bloating

Your bowels start becoming irritable.

Stomach starts to ache.

Cough and cold is a common symptom.

Itchy skin rash

Causes of food intolerance in children:

There are enzymes in your body, which help you to digest the food you consume. Some enzymes in your body are insufficient; which further causes food intolerance in children. For instance, lactose intolerance causes spasms, stomach aches, diarrhea and so on so forth.

Food intolerance can also be caused due to chemicals, such as chemicals present in coffee, tea, cheese and chocolates.

Some food products can also cause food intolerance such as undercooked beans containing aflatoxins can cause extreme stomach infections in children.

Some children are also intolerant to certain food products which have salicylates such as majority of fruits, vegetables, herbs and also additives. Processed food contains a high amount of salicylates.

Children can be allergic to antioxidants like artificial food coloring, artificial flavouring and preservatives.

What to do if you think your child has food intolerance?

Take your child for a skin prick test. In this test, the skin is pricked with a thin needle and when the blood oozes out, supplements of different food products are put in that area. If that particular area becomes reddish and begins to itch, your child has allergy to that certain food product

A blood test should be done. It verifies the level of lgE present in your blood and finds out if your child is suffering from food intolerance or not. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

Cholinergic Urticaria - Know The Different Signs!
Cholinergic Urticaria is a skin problem that a dermatologist can diagnose and treat. The most common cause of this condition includes sweating. It may be of four types including poral occlusion, generalised hypohidrosis, sweat allergy and idiopathic. Mostly, the common triggers include heat and consequent sweat which can cause a variety of symptoms in the internal organs. Let us find out more about the signs, symptoms and treatment of this ailment.

Signs: There are many signs of the onset of this ailment including a rise in the body's core temperature after physical pursuits like running, workouts, eating spicy food, fever, hot showers and even emotional stress. When there is a persistent rise in the temperature every time you indulge in such activities, it may be time to take a look at symptoms so that the dermatologist can make a proper diagnosis.

Skin Related Symptoms: Itching and burning sensation on the skin can point at the presence of this disease. One may also find rashes that can appear on the arms and neck, as well as the areas where the skin folds and sweat percolates. Also, you may find tiny welts that can form in a cluster to give the appearance of a large growth or swelling.

Digestive Tract Symptoms: The digestive tract may also get affected which can lead to loose motions and cramps in the abdomen.

Respiratory Tract Symptoms: There are a variety of symptoms of this condition, including breathless and wheezing as well as changes in the respiratory tract.

Other Symptoms: Headaches, palpitations, nausea and salivation are other common side effects and signs of overall discomfort. In very rare cases, Anaphylaxis can also set in as a symptom of this condition.

Treatment: Ample measures will also need to be taken so as to avoid a heart attack due to sudden cooling and drops in temperature. The dermatologist can prescribe beta blockers like Propranolol as well as anti histamine drugs that can contain the symptoms of the allergic reaction. Regular everyday use of antihistamine drugs may be required for these patients. Immunosuppressants and leukotriene inhibitors can also be used in such cases.

Lifestyle Changes: The best treatment in such cases is avoiding the allergens that trigger or cause the condition. In many cases, the patient may have to stop exercising so as to avoid the severe symptoms. The patient will also need to avoid too much exposure to ultraviolet rays which can lead to rapid desensitisation as well as autologous sweat.

Patients suffering from this condition should record and report even the smallest change to the dermatologist so that there are no serious health implications in the long run.

Tips To Combat Skin Itching!
Skin irritants are everywhere. Even in your house, there is practically no place where there are no skin irritants. Laundry detergents, air fresheners and floor polishes are just a few factors that cause skin itching. The reason why this happens is that products like air fresheners and floor polishes take away essential oils and water from the skin which leads to dryness and irritation. This type of dry, itchy skin can also progress to skin conditions like eczema. Here are some ways you can stop your skin from becoming dry and itchy:

Moisturize - To make up for the lack of moisture in the air, religiously apply moisturiser over your skin after having a shower. This helps hydrate the skin and keeps the moisture in your skin from escaping.

Right Moisturiser - In most cases, creams work better than lotions when dealing with dry skin. Creams that contain natural oils such as olive oil or jojoba oil work well to deep moisturise dry skin. Other ingredients your skin cream should contain are lactic acid, urea, lanolin, petrolatum, hyaluronic acid, etc.

Shower Wisely - Limit your showers to a maximum of 10 minutes and try to use warm water instead of hot water. Though standing under a hot shower may feel good at the moment, it rids the skin of its natural oils and hence dries the skin.

Use Gentle Soaps - A cream-based soap that is fragrance-free is great for dry skin. This soothes the skin and moisturises as it cleanses.

Protect Your Skin - Limit your skin s exposure to natural elements in the winter. If you must step out, cover yourself well and be sure to put on a pair of gloves and socks. Limit tasks that need you to wet your hands.

Shave Smartly - Shaving not only removes unwanted hair but can also irritate the skin. The ideal time to shave is after a shower as this is when your hair is most flexible. Also, always use a sharp, clean blade and shaving cream or gel to protect your skin.

Get a Humidifier - A humidifier can help regulate humidity levels within your house. However, excessive humidity is not good either as it can also adversely affect your skin.

Apply Coconut Oil - Coconut oil is rich in fatty acids that make up for the loss of moisture in the skin. The ideal time to apply coconut oil on the dry skin is before going to bed or after having a bath.

Be careful about laundry detergents - The soap being used to wash your clothes may not always be completely washed off. This can irritate sensitive skin and cause itchiness and flaking. When choosing laundry detergents pick one that is hypoallergenic.

Wear fabrics that love your skin - Avoid synthetic fabrics that stick to the skin instead, pick gentle fabrics like cotton or silk that allow the skin to breathe.
