Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) screening is a kind of blood test performed to detect chromosomal abnormalities in a fetus during the second trimester of pregnancy. It is a part of the triple test or Bart's test or Kettering test. AFP is released by the yolk sac, liver, and GI tract of unborn so the level is high in pregnant woman but it may also be present in non-pregnant persons. AFP test can be done on maternal serum (blood plasma). Instead of being diagnostic AFP serum test is determintal in nature. The sensitivity of this plasma protein poses alert for many diseases in baby and adults.

This screening of the quad test is conducted around 16th week of pregnancy. It does not require any major preparation before the test. As it involves testing blood only the general care while dressing. Wear a short sleeve blouson or gown. Take normal diet as suggested by your nutritionist. Drink adequate water and keep calm. A pregnant woman should know the last date of period exactly. Speak to your gynecologist if you have any queries. She/he will answer well and help in mental preparation for the test.

Alpha-fetoprotein test is a blood test carried out as an outpatient screening in a clinical laboratory. It is a painless test and takes only a few minutes. The test is done from maternal serum as well as the urine of the pregnant woman.
• Fasten an elastic lash on arm.
• Disinfectant is applied on the elbow joint, from where blood is drawn.
• Puncture skin with the sterilized syringe to collect blood from the vein.
• The blood is then cooled to a very low temperature before testing.
