Smelly armpit is definitely a cause for concern and can lead to social withdrawal. There are various reasons like improper hygiene, excessive caffeinated drinks (coffee, softdrinks) and excessive intake of foods like onion and garlic leading to smelly sweating. Also, sometimes there can be bacterial or fungal infection in the underarms that can cause bad odour from armpits rather than a smelly sweat. If you sweat excessively, use topical aluminium hydroxide lotion at night in the affected area. A dusting powder can be used during daytime. Diluted vinegar washes also help in balancing the ph and controlling infections, thereby reducing the smell. Drink adequate amounts of water and maintain a good hygiene like regularly clipping the underarm hairgrowth. A good dermatologist should be able to help you in diagnosing the cause of smelly underarms. There are various medicines and procedures now available to tackle this embarrassing condition. Hope this helps you. All the best.

Sweaty Hands called palmar hyperhidrosis is quite embarrassing condition. The specific cause for excessive sweating is unknown but it may be triggered by stress, anxiety, hormonal imbalances, health conditions like congestive heart failure, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease etc., But many believe it is caused by a hyperactive sympathetic nervous system, causing the sweat glands in the hands to produce sweat unnecessarily. Drysol or other Topical Medicines containing Aluminium chloride may be tried. Oral Medications - anticholinergic drugs like Oxybutynin, propantheline bromide and benztropinereduce hyperhidrosis. may be helpful. Iontophoresis treatment where patients place their hands in trays filled with water that pass a mild electrical current through the skin of the hands. This causes the outer layer of the skin to thicken, blocking the flow of sweat. Botox Injection where the toxins temporarily block the release of acetylcholine, the chemical neurotransmitter from the nerves that send signals to the sweat glands, but is very costly. The last option is Surgery a procedure called ETS - Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy. Avoid spicy foods, alcohol and caffeine, smoking and drink more water to lower your body temperature are also helpful.

Lifestyle changes Changing your lifestyle cannot cure primary hyperhidrosis (hyperhidrosis with no obvious cause), but it can improve your symptoms and help your confidence. The advice below may help. Avoid triggers that you know make your sweating worse, such as spicy foods and alcohol. Use antiperspirant frequently, rather than deodorant. Avoid wearing tight, restrictive clothing and man-made fibres, such as nylon. Wearing black or white clothing can minimise signs of sweating. Armpit shields can absorb excessive sweat and protect your clothes. Wear socks that absorb moisture, such as thick socks made of natural fibres, or special soles or sports socks designed to absorb moisture. Avoid wearing socks made out of man-made materials and change your socks at least twice a day if possible. Ideally wear shoes made of leather, and try to alternate between different pairs of shoes every day. Stronger antiperspirants If a regular antiperspirant doesn't control your sweating, your GP may prescribe or suggest a stronger one for you. Antiperspirant containing aluminium chloride is often used to treat hyperhidrosis. This works by plugging the sweat glands. You will need to apply it at night just before you go to sleep and wash it off in the morning.

Hi. I have a very strong smell of my sweat specially from my underarms and foot. Also my urine smells a lot. I have taken homeopathy medicines i.e. Silicea 200 but it was of no use. It feels very awkward to stink even after regular baths. I do drink a lot of water but no visible effect.

Dear User, avoid milk products and drink black tea or coffee. Take more fruits and avoid any spicy and salty foods as these will dehydrate you which will make your sweat smell bad. Avoid red meats if you are a non vegetarian. To tackle the sweat and dryness, use antiperspirant underarm roll ons or even the ones with aluminium hydroxide. For your feet avoid wearing tight shoes and socks. If you have to try wearing loose comfortable shoes or slip ons. Keep your under arms free of hair growth by trimming or shaving them regularly. take more fruits like watermelons, citrus fruits, pineapples etc. Use natural sandal soaps rather than milk based soaps. If you found my answer helpful, please leave a Positive feedback as it helps me with my Practice. Thank you.

For women & men, sweating is the normal body response to our daily activity. There are two types of sweat glands: 1. Eccrine glands 2. Apocrine glands Eccrines glands are sweats glands that found around the body. They produce sweat usually clear secretion composed of: -Water plus some salt (Na = sodium chloride) -Vitamin C -Metabolic waste such as ammonia, urea, uric acid -Lactic acid = chemical produces during heavy muscle activities. This is also called as body’s heat-regulator Which supplied with nerve endings that cause them to secrete sweat when external temperature or body temperature is high so when sweat evaporates off the skin surface, it carries large amount of body heat with it. So in hot day drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. A wierd body odor recent in origin might happen due to change in environment to a hot and humid place, taking nutritional supplements, decreased hydration, change in soaps or sprays, change in dietary habits, etc. Right now you can use an antibacterial soap which contains triclosan or tea tree oil. Regular use of deodorant spray containing aluminium, zinc salt, zirconium will help. Use of non sensitizing anti bacterial agents like fusidic acid topically can be helpful. Using an absorptive powder is also advisable. If all these measures are not able to help you after a regular use for two weeks, then I recommend you to consult your dermatologist to rule out any infections, liver or renal disorder and to give you stronger prescription medicines. Hope this answers your query. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have. Wishing you good health. Regards.
