Angiotensin Converting Enzyme test is also known as ACE test. It measures how much ACE is in your blood. If the test shows that you have higher than normal levels of ACE, you may have a condition known as sarcoidosis. In this condition, small abnormal knots of immune cells called granulomas form in various parts of the body. Also, medicines known as ACE inhibitors act on ACE levels to control blood pressure. The normal range for ACE is less than 40 nanomoles per milliliter per minute.
The AC E test, unlike other blood tests, does not require any special preparations. There is no requirement to fast for a particular time frame, no need to refrain from some foods or any medication. However, if the person is on blood thinning medication, the doctor or the person taking the blood test must be notified to take requisite precautions. At the time of the test, they will ensure special care to hold extra pressure on the puncture site after drawing blood so as to ensure that the person does not bleed excessively.
This test is commonly used to monitor a disease known as sarcoidosis. This condition leads to organ inflammation because of the inflammatory cells granulomas which form in the body. The organs which are susceptible to damage are the lungs, skin, eyes, lymph nodes, liver, etc. Other symptoms of the conditions are night sweats, a loss of appetite, joint pain, etc. The test may also be used by doctors to monitor other conditions like Gaucher’s disease, which is a genetic condition which causes build up of fatty substances called lipids in cells and internal organs. This leads to easy bruising, fatigue and bone pain.
For this blood test, a small sample of blood is taken from the person’s arm vein. The steps involved are: the testing professional will tie a tight band i.e. a tourniquet on the persons arm to make the veins more prominent. He will clean the area of the vein with alcohol or an antiseptic and will then insert the needle. A prick will be felt at this time. Blood is collected this way into a tube or vial attached to the needle. After the required amount is collected, the needle is removed and pressure is applied on the puncture site for a few seconds. A bandage is placed over the site.
