APC Mutation Analysis By Sequencing (Familial Adenomatous Polyposis) Test

APC Mutation Analysis By Sequencing (Familial Adenomatous Polyposis) Test

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is the most common adenomatous polyposis syndrome. It is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder characterized by the early onset of hundreds to thousands of adenomatous polyps throughout the colon. If left untreated, all patients with this syndrome will develop colon cancer by age 35-40 years. In addition, an increased risk exists for the development of other malignancies. This test is done to detect whether the patient is suffering from Colon Cancer or not.

No special preparation is required for these tests. Wearing a short sleeve or sleeveless shirt or T-shirt will be helpful for the technicians to draw blood from the veins. Inform your doctor if you are on any medications or have any underlying medical conditions or allergies before undergoing this test. Your doctor depending on your condition, will give specific instructions

This test is performed to detect Colon Cancer as soon as possible. If not detected earlier the patient has a chance of dying around 40-45 years of age. It also infects the people around the patient, so it is always better to detect it earlier.

For the blood to be drawn, at first the area is cleansed with an antiseptic and tourniquet is placed around the upper arm for pressure. 5ml of blood is collected. A needle is inserted into the vein and blood is drawn and collected in a vial. Now, the tourniquet is removed and the patient is provided with cotton balls to prevent further bleeding. Then the DNA of the patient is extracted from the blood of around 10μg.
