The Chlamydia Trachomatis test is conducted to detect the infection caused by the bacteria Chlamydia Trachomatis. Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria. The test is very important as it helps to prevent long term complications and stops the infection from spreading to others. The infection is generally common among people who are between 15 – 24 years. Chlamydia spreads due to sexual contact with a partner who is infected by the bacteria.
If you are a woman, tell your doctor about the douches, vagina wash, or creams that your use. You should also let your doctor know about the antibiotics you take. Your doctor might ask you to stop using the products or taking the drugs 24 hours prior to the test as these can affect the results. Menstruation does not make any difference. To collect the urine sample, your doctor may ask you to a couple of hours after you last urinated before you take the sample. Your doctor may also give you other instructions, to which you must adhere.
After analysing your blood sample, the results come out. If your test result is positive, it means that the Chlamydia infection is active and you should take treatment with a course of antibiotics. If your test result is negative, it means that there is no active infection. If you are at an increased risk, it is important that you go for regular screening to detect possible infections.
For testing women, a vaginal swab is the optimal sample. During the pelvic examination, your doctor will use a cotton swab or a small brush to collect vaginal secretions or a sample of cells. If you are undergoing testing, you can collect a sample of the vaginal secretions yourself. Urine can also be used as a sample for the test. For men, a sample of urine is considered for the test. Collect the initial portion of your urine when you begin to urinate in a container that will be provided to you by your doctor or lab. The initial urine collected for the test is known as first-catch. Sometimes, your doctor may also collect sample from other affected areas such as your pelvis, penis, anus, or throat.
