Cold Agglutinin Test

Cold Agglutinin Test

About: The Cold Agglutinins Blood Test is conducted to measure the level of cold agglutinins in the blood. Cold agglutinins are antibodies that damage red blood cells by causing them to combine together during low temperatures. They are produced by the immune system and often cause anaemia. And Anaemia can lead to several health issues. A very high concentration of cold agglutinins causes a kind of numbness in your body. As the red blood cells begin to get destroyed, the flow of blood to fingers and toes may stop. This is often the case in people who are suffering from pneumonia. Hence a Cold Agglutinins Test is needed to monitor the presence of this autoantibody drug in the body.

Preparation: No specific preparation is required for this test. However, it is advisable to keep your doctor informed in case you are allergic to anything or if you are on any kind of medication. The doctor will inform you of necessary precautions or actions to be taken in that case. Also, since the test requires blood sample from your arm, it is recommended that you wear a sleeveless or half sleeved t-shirt, else a full sleeved t-shirt that can be folded up easily

Uses: A normal value indicating the presence of the drug depends from clinic to clinic and patient to patient. Usually, if the blood sample shows reactions even after being diluted 32 times, it is an indication of abnormal levels of the drug and must be further tested to confirm

Procedure: The procedure involves taking a blood sample in the following manner: A tourniquet or a band is wrapped a few inches above your arm to prevent the flow of blood. That part of the skin from where the blood is to be collected is cleansed with alcohol After the area is cleaned properly, your skin is pulled tight. The needle cap is removed and the needle point is held in alignment to the desired vein. With a careful and swift manner, the needle is inserted into the vein.More than one try may be needed if not done correctly The syringe plunger is pulled out slowly to collect the required amount of blood. A gauze or cotton is placed on the site where the needle is inserted, and the needle is pulled out. The wrap around your band is also released. And then a bandage is applied to stop the flow of blood. A container, which has an appropriate preservative, is kept ready from before. The collected blood is moved into this container. The needle along with the syringe is disposed in a hygienic manner.

LimitationsFalse-negative results may occur if the sample is refrigerated prior to the separation of the serum from the red blood cells. This test is not a direct measure of the clinical significance of the cold agglutinin and must be used in conjunction with the patient’s clinical presentation and other laboratory values. Normal individuals may have low levels of cold agglutinins that have no clinical significance.

Are you looking for an ideal and effective remedy for common cold? Opt for Ayurvedic methods, which are considered excellent for management of cold. Common cold accounts for being the most common dosha or disorder, according to Ayurveda. Every individual suffers from common cold more than once during his or her life.

Ayurvedic view
The condition is referred to as Pratishyaya in Ayurveda. All the three doshas are responsible for common cold. In case of common colds due to vata dosha, dry cough, mucus discharge, and a runny nose are common symptoms. People with pitta dosha having common cold are likely to experience a sore throat, fever, and nose blockage. For people with kapha dosha, common colds are featured by thick mucus discharge, headaches, and head heaviness. The most important Ayurvedic remedies for common cold are as follows:

Ayurvedic herbs
Various natural herbs are used for the treatment of common cold.

  1. Bishop’s weed is used for opening up clogged nasal passages. You have to tie its seeds in a piece of cloth and inhale it directly. This clears the congestion and treats nasal blockages in children effectively.
  2. Cassia roots are ideal for treating common cold. The roots have to be burned and you need to inhale the smoke which is emitted. Your mucus discharge increases after this treatment, but stops totally after a while.
  3. Boil cinnamon with pepper and honey in water and consume it. This is ideal for reducing a sore throat and preventing your common cold from turning chronic.
  4. Cumin seeds have antiseptic properties and are effective in treating the harmful effects of common cold in case of fever. Throat irritations are healed as well.

Dietary modifications

Patients of common cold are recommended to fast for an entire day, which enables the body to eliminate toxins. After this, you can eat vegetable soups, and steamed, boiled vegetables with a little spice to taste. You should avoid all food items which are tough to digest such as milk, yoghurt, and food items which are oily, spicy, and rich. You should take hot food in case of common cold.

Ayurvedic treatment

  1. You can use Bringasavam, which is a prescribed Ayurvedic medicine for common cold. You should take 15 ml of this regularly for a period of seven days.
  2. You can also opt for a nasal drop called Anutaila, which is prescribed by all Ayurvedic practitioners. You can also mix Trikatu power with honey. It reduces inflammation in your respiratory tract. You can also use Shabindu taila as a nasal drop.

Cold & Flu - Common Homeopathic Remedies For It!

No matter how healthy a lifestyle you lead, common cold is something no one can escape from. While a mild cold can be unpleasant to deal with, a bad cold can interfere with day to day activities and keep you restricted to your bed. While conventional medicine is not very effective when it comes to treating a cold, homoeopathy can help shorten the course of this disease and provide relief from the body ache and stuffiness associated with it.

  1. Aconite: Aconite is every homoeopath’s go to remedy for common cold brought on by a sudden change in weather or exposure to cold drafts. The earlier aconite is taken the more effective it is in curing a cold. Colds that cause headaches, frequent sneezing and congestion without any discharge can be effectively treated with this homoeopathic remedy.
  2. Arsenicum Alba: This is an excellent remedy for winter colds. In such cases, the patient will usually experience a watery discharge from the nose accompanied by congestion in the nostrils. The discharge may also cause dryness and crust around the nostrils and on the upper lip. Arsenicum alba also helps relieve headaches, sneezing and burning in the nose and throat. This homoeopathic remedy is often prescribed to people suffering from a constant cold throughout the year.
  3. Allium cepa: Colds that cause heavy discharge and smarting of the eyes and nose can be treated with allium cepa. In such cases, the patient will often complain of crusting around the nostrils and burning of the eyes. He may also be extra sensitive to light and sneeze excessively. Being out in the open may help temporarily relieve some of these symptoms.
  4. Euphrasia: This remedy is used to treat colds that affect only the upper respiratory mucous membrane. Some of the symptoms presented in such cases include copious discharge form the nose and acrid lachrymation and eruptions on the nostrils.
  5. Gelsemium: Gelsimium is often prescribed to treat colds that are accompanied by fever and chills and stuffiness of the head. Such patients also exhibit signs of fatigue and weakness and complain of a watery, bland discharge form the nose and frequent sneezing. Such colds are more common in the summer and spring season.
  6. Mercurius: Colds that affect the frontal sinuses and cause burning in the nose and eyes along with violent sneezing attacks can be treated with mercurius. In such cases, the patient may also have a tendency to perspire excessively and may complain of their symptoms being aggravated in the early mornings. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Homeopath.
