Cortisol Serum (7 to 9 AM) Test

Cortisol Serum (7 to 9 AM) Test

also known as: Hydrocortisone, Compound F

Cortisol is an adrenal hormone responsible for controlling the glucose metabolism in the body. It also plays a key role in maintaining the stress levels, blood pressure, and immunity of an individual. The Cortisol Serum test is conducted to check the levels of this hormone in the blood. It helps in diagnosing the diseases like Addison’s disease and Cushing’s disease which disturb the cortisol levels. The blood sample taken for the morning test ranges from 6 to 23 micrograms per decilitre. The results are provided in normal, higher than normal, and lower than normal denomination.

The test is recommended for the morning time because cortisol is available at its highest value. A fast is not required before the test and you can eat according to your normal schedule. You should, however, avoid any drugs containing estrogen and androgens. They affect the levels of cortisol in the blood which can impact the test results. The hormone is also affected by physical stress. Therefore, you should avoid any kind of physical activity.

The Cortisol Serum test is used to identify any diseases which affect the hormone’s level in the blood. It is also used to notify you about the disturbing cortisol levels which might cause increased stress and lower immunity. The test predicts the following: Tumour in the adrenal gland causing high-levels of cortisol production Excess growth of the pituitary gland creating high cortisol Hypopituitarism which lowers the production of cortisol due to inefficient functioning of the pituitary gland Ineffective functioning of the adrenal gland.

The blood sample taken for the test is done through the following process: An elastic band is wrapped around the upper arm in order to restrict the flow of blood. This also gives a better visibility to the veins for inserting the needle. The skin area for inserting the needle is cleaned with an alcohol pad. The needle is inserted into the vein to draw out the blood sample. Once the blood is collected, the elastic band is removed and the skin cleaned with cotton gauze. This sample is then sent to the lab for testing.
