A culture and sensitivity test or a CS test is a two test divided into two part first a culture test in which is used to determine the infection causing organism from the sample body fluid like blood, pus, saliva etc. The Sensitivity test is done to check which medication will be effective in controlling and eradicating the infection. Pus in urine or stools are an indication of the presence of leucocytes in them. Leucocytes is the collective term for different types of White Blood Cells. Their function is to protect the body from invading infections. Determining the number of Leucocytes helps the doctors determine the infection.
No specific preparation is required where CS test for Urine and stool pus is to be done. The patient will be given a sterilized container and a bag to collect and transport the sample which can be collected at either home or the pathology clinic.
A CS of urine pus helps in determining the effective therapy for Recurrent Urinary tract infections, Bladder inflammation and other conditions like kidney stones, diabetes, and an enlarged prostate in men. The CS of Stool pus helps to determine inflammatory diarrhoea or Inflammatory Bowel disease.
Once the sample is collected it is properly named and tagged. The sample is then spread on a specialized growing medium where the microorganism which can be a bacteria or fungus grows and forms colonies. This is called as culture. This culture is then exposed to different antibiotics to see which antibiotic effectively kills the microorganism.
