The Electrolyte Panel is a blood test which performed for calculating the level of carbon dioxide and electrolytes in the blood. Both carbon dioxide and electrolyte have their significant roles in this analysis. The blood stores the carbon dioxide in the form of bicarbonate which helps to maintain the pH balance in the blood. Electrolytes can be termed as minerals in the body which comprises of chloride, bicarbonate, sodium, and potassium. Both the components help the body functioning healthy including the heart rate, functioning of brain and muscle contraction, keeping the balance of body fluids healthily.

No specific preparation is required for an electrolyte panel test as it is performed just like a regular blood test. One should not wear tightly fitted clothes when going for a standard blood test. Wear a short sleeved shirt or loose sleeve which can fold up with ease when required.

An electrolyte panel can be used in different ways depending on the requirements of your doctors depending on your health checkups. Electrolyte panel is a test which can be used:

  • To check on your medical condition
  • To diagnose any abnormality
  • To check the level of electrolyte which may or may not disturbed by the medication you're having.

The increased level of electrolyte indicates:
  • Kidney disorders
  • increased level of acidity in blood
  • Pregnancy
  • dehydration & etc

The decreased level of electrolytes indicates: increased level of insulin

No specific method is required for the electrolyte panel test, a few of the steps mentioned below:

  • The surface needs to be wiped from antiseptic dapped cotton from where the blood has to drawn out.
  • An elastic band tied would be around your shoulder for locating the veins.
  • Now with the help of an injection, the blood is taken out either from shoulder part of the back of your hand.
  • A cotton pad should immediately be put on the spot from where the blood is taken out.
  • A bandage can also be put on the place to ensure protection from infections.
